Here are two finalists for The World-Herald’s Nebraska high school athlete of the year award, which will be announced Sunday, June 30. Each day leading up to the announcement, we will release two more nominees until all 12 are revealed.

Cole Evans, Grand Island

The Creighton baseball recruit was the state’s Gatorade player of the year after an All-Nebraska season with a .556 batting average, 30 runs scored, 30 RBIs, 15 doubles, two triples, a home run and eight stolen bases. He was 3-3 pitching. In football, he was the Class A all-state quarterback and second-team All-Nebraska after leading the Islanders to the finals for the first time since 1990. He threw for 1,581 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Megan Woods, Grand Island Central Catholic

The UNO volleyball recruit was all-state in two sports and a state champion in a third. She was Class C-1 all-state in volleyball and broke the school record with 1,618 kills. She averaged a double-double in basketball (16.9 ppg, 10.8 rpg) while making the C-1 all-state second team. She was on the winning No. 2 doubles team at the Class B tennis meet.
