Hear Grand Island is ready to rock the Railside district this summer, beginning today.

The first installment of the free concert series will be Friday at Railside Plaza. The Eagle Beverage Garden and local food trucks will be serving up refreshments beginning at 6 p.m. and the concert will be from 7 to 11, followed by an after party at the Glass Bar. DJ Grand Island will be playing before the first set, in between sets and during the after party.

As in the past, Grand Island area bands will be featured, but bands from Colorado, Montana, Oregon and Massachusetts will also be performing this summer, in addition to Nebraska groups, with concerts every Friday through Aug. 2.

Hear Grand Island organizers are also planning additional activities along with the concerts this year, including a talent show this week. The July 12 concert will be conducted in conjunction with the Hall County Fair and its Q4A Cause: Rockin’ Rib Revival in the Aurora Co-op Pavilion at Fonner Park, with The Midnight Devils, Briner and Featherfoot Charlie performing.

Hear Grand Island will also be adding new products to its merchandise selection of t-shirts, bandannas, buttons and pens. Totally recycled plastic and aluminum water bottles will be added to the merchandise line to reduce the amount of plastic bottle waste.

T.J. Roe, managing director for Hear Grand Island, has said, along with bringing in new music from bigger cities, one of the underlying goals of the concert series is to get Grand Island up and running with its own music scene.

So check out the action tonight at Railside Plaza, when Freakabout and Twinsmith will take the stage, along with the talent show. There is no admission charge. More information is available at www.facebook.com/HearGI/
