SALADO, Texas — Virgil Dean Lucas, 68, of Salado, Texas, passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, at Baylor Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, after bravely fighting lifelong issues with heart disease.
Virgil was born Dec. 30, 1947, in Grand Island to Dean and Arlene (Evans) Lucas. He was raised in Grand Island and Alda and graduated from Wood River High School in 1966.
He proudly served in the United States Army, and then continued to serve his country and fellow veterans with his 30-year career with the Veterans Administration. He retired in 2004 from the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System as the Administrator of the Temple, Texas, Veterans Hospital.
In addition to helping veterans, he enjoyed anything connected with the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating and simply watching wildlife from his back porch.
He was a lifelong member of the American Legion in Grand Island, and of course, a dedicated Nebraska Husker fan.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marilyn (Wadas) Lucas of Salado, Texas; sisters, Marlene Melanson and husband, Frank, of Sun City, Ariz., and Linda Callahan and husband, Jack, of Shelton; sister-in-law and brother in-law, Marlene and Jim Olsen of Grand Island and Gary and Nancy Wadas of Fort Collins, Colo.; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by both parents and a younger brother, Kyle Lucas.
A private celebration of his life and inurnment of his ashes will be held at a later date.
