HASTINGS — Phyllis Marjorie (Thaden) Rice, 94, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings, with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Memorials may be given to the family or donor’s choice.
Phyllis was born Dec. 15, 1923, to Henry Herman and Catherine Marie (Post) Thaden at the family farmstead located just south of Doniphan.
In May 1923 she was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Doniphan. In 1929, Phyllis started school at Hall County District 46 and received her eighth-grade diploma in May 1937. She was received into full communion with the Lutheran Church by the solemn rite of confirmation on May 16, 1937. Phyllis graduated from Doniphan High School in May 1941. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Hastings and worked for a short time at a café and at the hospital. From 1942 to 1944, she worked as a checker for Safeway Stores.
On Dec. 14, 1946, she married James M. Rice. Phyllis spent her entire married life living in Texas and then moved back to Hastings in about 1988.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Eleanor Poen.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Charles Knight of Hastings; a granddaughter and spouse, McKay (Knight) and Jeremy Davis, and a great-granddaughter, Zelda Rey Davis, all of Republic, Mo.
