He was born on Feb. 22, 1947, in York, to Leonard and Ramona (Pfister) Traudt. Dan attended elementary school in Stockham, and graduated from Henderson High School in 1965. He then attended Kearney State College where he was a four-year letter-winner in basketball, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education.
Dan began his long-time teaching and coaching career at Barr Junior High in Grand Island in 1969, a commitment that spanned 37 years. He was a much-admired teacher, a well-respected and successful football and basketball coach, a father figure to many, and encourager to all. He also officiated countless sporting events over the years, including multiple Nebraska state basketball tournaments.
Following his retirement in 2007, Dan enjoyed spending time with his family, and especially delighted in watching his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed gardening, spending time at his lake cabin, and following the Huskers. Warm and sincere, Dan loved to engage with people. He was always quick to ask a question, share a memory, or give a compliment.
He is survived by his mother, Ramona of Grand Island; his children, Cami (Mike) Beck of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Brandon (Christy) of Grand Island; sister, Nancy (Jim) Lichtenberg of Cedar Bluffs; and brother Tim (Terri) of Minneapolis, Minn. He married Susan Sixel in 2002, becoming a beloved stepfather to her three sons. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, many relatives, and wonderful lifelong friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his four grandparents; and father, Leonard Traudt.
