OMAHA — Colleen K. Street, 64, went to her Heavenly home on Thursday, July 4, 2019, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She and her husband, John, made their home in Grand Island until recently moving to Omaha.
Colleen was born on July 7, 1954, to Russell and Eleanora Johnson in Columbus. She was raised in Stromsburg, where she graduated from high school in 1972. She later received both her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in special education from Kearney State College. Her special education teaching career started with Educational Service Unit 9 in Hastings in 1976, working with young adults with developmental disabilities. Colleen later spent the rest of her teaching career with the Grand Island Public Schools/Central Nebraska Support Service Program as a special education teacher and consultant, retiring in 2012.
Colleen will be remembered for her kind and warm heart, never-ending smile, her love of children, family and friends. She is survived by her husband, John of Omaha; children, Andrea and husband, Luke Karohl, of Omaha, and Kayla and husband, Dustin Hunt, of East Lansing, Mich.; grandchildren, Eleanora and Layla Karohl; along with many extended family and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 12, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 11802 Pacific St. in Omaha.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the West Center Chapel, 7805 W. Center Road in Omaha. Interment will be in the Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and/or Methodist Hospital Foundation-Cancer Care.
