YORK — Seventy-eight people participated in an emergency tabletop exercise on June 27 at York General Hospital.

The purpose of the exercise was to assess the readiness of hospital staff, medical staff, law enforcement and emergency agencies in responding to an influx of a large number of injured individuals in a short time frame. Attendees were able to discuss scenarios in groups and share ideas to improve response and collaboration throughout the evening.

Agencies that participated include: York General; York Fire and Rescue; Henderson EMS; Bradshaw Fire Department; South Central EMS (Geneva, NE); Fillmore County Hospital (Geneva); Four Corners Health Department (York); Nebraska State Patrol; York County Sheriff’s Office; York County Emergency Management; York Police Department; Memorial Hospital (Seward); Frye Frazy Security; Waco Fire Department; Utica Fire Department; Star Care (Lincoln); Henderson Health Care; York Medical Clinic; York Surgical Associates; Benedict Fire and Rescue; McCool Fire and Rescue.

Carrie Peterson, Director of Nursing from Henderson Health Care, commented “A tabletop drill like this shows great cooperation between hospitals, and it shows that we have our patients’ best interest in mind. I feel that through cooperation in drills like this we know we can rely on each other in critical situations.”

Sargent Jared Jacobsen, a 20-year veteran of the Nebraska State Patrol, agreed. “The drill went really well; there was good collaboration and lots of ideas addressed . . . Communication is key, and situations are fluid – drills like this help us adjust to changing conditions.”

“York General recognizes the importance of emergency preparedness efforts. This table top exercise allowed us to work with numerous agencies, furthering our collaboration during an emergent event. Exercises like this one help us to continue to meet the needs of those we care for,” concluded Jenny Obermier, COO/CNO.
