YORK — The York Public School Board convened Monday for Mike Lucas’s last meeting as YPS Superintendent.

Among the topics covered was pay for support staff. In 2018-2019 support staff – including secretaries and custodians – received a raise of 3.2%. Lucas said he recommended a pay raise for the upcoming school year as well. In comparison to YPS area peer schools, support staff beginning has been lower. It was decided said support staff would receive a raise of 3%. Lucas emphasized ensuring that 1 – 3 year employees do not “get passed up by [an] increase in beginning pay.”

By the numbers, secretarial staff works about 32,000 hours a year. Custodial staff put in about 26,000 regular hours, plus 1,240 overtime hours annually.

Paraprofessional educator staff logged approximately 51,000 hours per year, and bus drivers contributed 20,000 a year.

Total YPS support staff hours came to a total of approximately 130,000.

Substitute teacher pay was also on the docket. It was noted that for the past three years, substitute pay has increased. The board voted unanimously to leave hourly pay for substitutes in 2019-2020 the same as the last school year, at $120 an hour. In 2017 $174,290 was paid to both faculty and staff substitutes; in 2018, $198,562.

The board will again convene in July.
