KEARNEY — CHI Health Good Samaritan and Safe Kids Platte Valley will have approximately 200 new bike helmets available to the public 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the Kearney Public Library, 2020 First Ave.

Helmets in toddler through adult sizes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. A suggested donation of $10 will go to the Good Samaritan Foundation.

All helmets meet current safety standards and will be fitted by trained staff members from Good Samaritan Emergency Services.

Bike helmets reduce head injuries by 85 percent and brain injury by 88 percent. More children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking than any other sport, but only 45 percent of children under age 14 usually wear a bike helmet.
