LINCOLN — County offices of University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension have moisture meters homeowners may borrow to monitor the moisture content of flooded materials.
It can take weeks or months to dry a house to the point where repairs can be made. Homeowners often discover mold in walls after a flood because they didn’t wait for the structure to dry before making repairs.
Moisture levels can’t be determined by appearance or time spent drying, so a calibrated meter is recommended to measure levels before rebuilding.
So far, 150 moisture meters have been distributed to Extension offices. More are on the way. Contact your local office for details about borrowing a meter and instructions for its use.
