HOLDREGE — Manuel Gomez, who is being accused of shooting three men Thursday in Holdrege and killing two of them, is being held without bond at the Phelps County Jail.

Gomez, 45, of Holdrege appeared in Phelps County Court Friday afternoon where charges were formally read to him. He is charged with two counts of felony first-degree murder, one count of felony first-degree assault, three counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of felony flight to avoid arrest.

Judge Tim Hoeft presented the charges to Gomez and the possible penalties if Gomez is convicted.

Gomez is accused of shooting Doyle Morse, 64; Raymond Burton, 65 and David Rogers, 54, all of Holdrege, Thursday afternoon at their individual residences. Burton and Rogers died at Sunrise View where they lived.

Morse, who is listed in serious condition at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney, was shot at his home at 416 Logan St., but was able to call 911 for help.

At a press conference Friday afternoon Holdrege Police Chief Dennis Damoude said Gomez is the lone suspect in the case. Damoude didn’t elaborate on a motive for the shootings, and was unclear if there was a relationship between Gomez and his alleged victims.

Damoude also declined to comment on what Gomez’s previous conviction was that made him a felon in possession of a firearm. According to state criminal records, Gomez has never been convicted of a felony in Nebraska.

The last murder in Holdrege, according to Damoude, was in the 1950s. The victim was shot in Holdrege and the body later was found in Kansas. Damoude didn’t elaborate on that case, which never was solved.

Anyone with information about Thursday’s shootings is asked to contact the Holdrege Police Department at 308-995-4407, the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office at 308-995-5692 or Crimestoppers at 308-995-2424.
