WOOD RIVER — Scott Frost is returning home.

The Nebraska football coach will be in Wood River March 14 for a “Scott Frost: Welcome Home Tailgate” at Babel’s Barn. The event is brought to the community by Wood River Vision 20/20 and Stick Creek Kids.

Frost will be honored on his first official trip home since being named head coach of the University of Nebraska, while making a case for investing in early childhood education. All proceeds from the event will go into the Stick Creek capital campaign.

More than a year ago, Wood River Vision 20/20 began exploring the child care demand and caregiver capacity, both now and looking into the future. Responses to a child-care survey conducted in January last year showed that 65 households would consider using childcare in Wood River if it were available. Vision’s Child Care Task force was formed to tackle this shortage head-on. Since then, more than 1,350 volunteer hours have been invested in the project locally.

Since the launch of a capital campaign in November, the project has received gifts of $500,000 from the Grace & Donna Rae Koepp Foundation, $100,000 from Donna Moyer, as well as grants from the Community Block Development Grant ($350,000), S.N. & Gloria Wolbach Foundation ($15,000) and Cargill Inc. ($30,000). The Thelen family has agreed to donate roughly .85 acres of land adjacent to the aquatic center for the center to be built upon. Altogether the project has raised more than 60 percent of the $1.965 million goal.

First National Bank of Omaha will be sponsoring the tailgate that will feature BBQ, wings, sides, ice cream and Subway cookies. A meal and two free drinks are included in the ticket price.

Due to NCAA regulations regarding recruiting-eligible demographics, this is a 21 and over event. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with speakers beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tables of eight are available for $800, with Red Zone tables available for $1,200. Red Zone tables are closest to the stage and also include recognition throughout the event. Individuals are encouraged to purchase a table with friends, but individual tickets are available for $100 each. Reserved seating at the event will be organized on a first tables purchased, best view basis.

To purchase a table, see Sara Arnett at Heritage Bank Wood River or contact Lindsay (Dibbern) Buechler, (308) 627-8478; Eric “Plug” Nielsen, (308) 380-5448; Jodi Rauert, (308) 380-7475; Sherry Smith, (308) 379-5212; or Penny Volf, (308) 380-5981.
