A former Grand Island Senior High and Hastings College athlete was killed in motorcycle crash in St. Louis, Monday night.

The motorcyclist, Curtis T. Hudiburgh, a 26-year-old man from Lincoln and formerly from Grand Island died in the crash on the Poplar Street Bridge in St. Louis and brought eastbound traffic on Highway 40 (Interstate 64) to a halt for more than an hour, according the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

The newspaper reported that Hudiburgh was trying to avoid traffic ahead of him that had slowed down when he lost control of his 2005 Harley-Davidson and collided with the back of a semi-trailer truck, police said. His motorcycle was temporarily trapped under the truck’s trailer as it continued on the bridge.

The semi truck left the scene, police said. Investigators were working to determine if the truck driver was aware the motorcycle had hit the trailer or was trapped underneath it.

Hudiburgh was a 2009 graduate of Grand Island Senior High and was a running back for the school’s football team. He also played football for Hastings College from 2009 to 2013. In addition to playing football, Hudiburgh was also on the Islanders’ wrestling team and track team.
