Todd Owen has opened a new Edward Jones location at 1028 N. Webb Road in Grand Island.

He joins Will Armstrong, Matthew Armstrong, Tom Noble, Terry Pfeifer, Scott Roach and Phil Hranac as the seventh Edward Jones financial adviser in Grand Island.

Owen and his branch office administrator, Donna Gustafson, opened the new office on March 18.

“Donna and I work as a team to serve our clients,” Owen said. “I couldn’t do it without her.”

Owen and his wife, April, have lived in Grand Island for nearly 24 years.

Prior to opening the business, he worked for State Farm Insurance, managing claim offices throughout Nebraska.

Owen said he and his wife have been Edward Jones clients for about 20 years.

“I have always been intrigued and interested in a career in investments,” he said.

They have also been good friends with Will and Lori Armstrong.

Owen said State Farm was planning to make changes in its Grand Island claims office, which could have relocated them.

He said Will Armstrong and his brother, Matthew, had grown their businesses over the years.

With the encouragement of the Armstrongs and his wife, Owen said, he decided to change career paths and become an Edward Jones adviser.

“They were looking to bring someone on board to work with some of their clients and to open another office,” Owen said.

He passed tests that earned him his securities license, along with tests for health and life insurance licenses, last year.

Owen has traveled to the Edward Jones home office in St. Louis three times in the past year.

“It was like going back to school again,” he said. “I have been a student of investing, and I earned my chartered financial consultant designation while I was employed with State Farm.”

That allowed Owen to be familiar with a lot of the subject matter he needed to be an Edward Jones financial adviser.

“I became an Edward Jones client because my grandparents were investors with Jones,” Owen said. “When they passed away, they left some investments with Jones to my brother and me, and that is how I first became involved with Jones. From there, my interest just continued to grow once I got involved in it.”

He said it all really came together for him to make a career change.

“I tell people that, the way it all came together, that it was meant to be,” Owen said.

Owen worked with Matthew Armstrong in his office for a year before finding a suitable location to start his own office. The building where his office is located was built last year.

Edward Jones was founded in 1922 by Edward D. Jones Sr. Over the years, the business has grown to serve nearly 7 million clients with offices in all 50 states and Canada. The company has more than 13,000 financial advisers.

Edward Jones provides long-term investment opportunities that include municipal, government and corporate bonds; mutual funds; common stocks; and tax-advantaged securities.

“We do so much more for people than just helping them pick good investments or plan for retirement,” Owen said. “It is about helping them develop an overall big-picture financial plan that addresses all their needs, not just retirement and picking good investments.”

He said that includes helping with estate planning, making sure they are properly insured for needs such as health and life, emergency cash and more.

“It is all about helping our clients sleep better at night because they have a plan to address their needs,” he said.
