What is compost?

Compost is a mixture of decayed grass clippings, leaves, and other yard waste that is used as a valuable organic fertilizer for lawns, gardens, mulch, landscaping purposes, and agricultural applications. It is also helpful for erosion control and wetland preservation.

Organic compost is a key source of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), important macronutrients that plants require for proper growth. The compost we offer has been tested to offer the following characteristics:

  • Total Nitrogen (N): 1.82%
  • Phosphorus (P): 1.12%
  • Potassium (K): 2.11%
  • pH: 8.3

How is compost used?

When applying for general landscaping:

Many area-landscaping professionals swear by the positive results of using compost. When properly applied to the root zone, organic compost from Mid-Nebraska Disposal will improve the growing quality of your soil and turf.

For best results, plan to till one inch of compost into every 4 to 6 inches of soil. For sandy soils, simply add the compost to existing soil, and till it in. For heavy clay soils, till the soil first before adding the compost, and re-till to be sure the mixture is properly dispersed.

Rake the surface smooth, plant, and water.

When applying to established lawns:

After the lawn has been aerated, spread compost uniformly using a broadcast spreader to a depth of 1/8 to 1/4-inch deep. One cubic yard of compost will cover approximately 1,300 square feet. Water thoroughly. Some professionals prefer to use a 60/40 mix of compost and sand or topsoil, for its greater ease in spreading.

Repeat spring and fall.

When applying to new lawns:

Before applying sod, cover the area with one inch or more of compost. For best results, plan to till one inch of compost into every 4 to 6 inches of soil. One cubic yard of compost will cover approximately 325 square feet.

When seeding, plan to till one inch of compost into every 4 to 6 inches of soil. For sandy soils, simply add the compost to existing soil, and till it in. For heavy clay soils, till the soil first before adding the compost, and re-till to be sure the mixture is properly dispersed

When applying to flower and vegetable gardens:

In the spring or fall, apply a 1” to 2” layer of compost over the entire garden and till into 6” to 12” of soil. For established perennial flowerbeds, apply a 1” layer of compost, and mix lightly with existing soil.

When applying to trees and shrubs:

Apply a 1” to 2” layer of compost on the surface of the ground, within the plant’s drip line. Aerate prior to application for best results.

How much compost do you need?

You’ll need to know the size and type of the area you are covering, to determine how much compost you’ll need. We can help you with specifics, but here is a general guideline to get you started:

DepthConversion
1/4".02083
1".08333
1 ½".125
2".16667

1 Cubic foot = .037037 Cubic Yards*

*A pickup bed holds an average of between 2 ½ and 3 cubic yards.

Length in feet x Width in feet x Conversion x .037037 = Number of Cubic Yards Needed

Examples:

  • Covering a 30’ x 10’ new lawn with 1” of compost:
    30 x 10 x .08333 x .037037 = .93 Cubic Yards Needed
  • Covering a 30’ x 10’ new lawn with 1 ½” of compost:
    30 x 10 x .125 x .037037 = 1.38 Cubic Yards Needed
  • Covering a 30’ x 10’ new lawn with 2” of compost:
    30 x 10 x .16667 x .037037 = 1.85 Cubic Yards Needed
  • Covering a 30’ x 10’ established lawn 1/4” of compost:
    Example: 30 x 10 x .02083 x .037037 = .23 Cubic Yards Needed

Recycling

We are committed to meeting the needs of our customers, serving as good stewards of the planet, and protecting our future by extending the life of landfills. Mid-Nebraska Disposal illustrates that commitment by being the first locally owned trash hauler to offer free curbside recycling.

This service provides a once-a-week pickup of recyclables. The items collected through this program are prepared for reuse in new products and packaging, which reduces the amount of waste entering our landfills, saves resources and helps reduce the cost of many products.

To help ensure the program's continued success, we ask that you not put your recycling bin out for pickup until it is completely full, and that you take just a few moments to make sure your recyclable items are properly prepared:
