Downtown Details

Barrett Stinson
In the streets and alleys of downtown Grand Island are details hidden among the larger scene. Some are off the beaten track; others are in plain view if you’ll only look. Looking down at your feet where the sidewalk meets the street, you can see small rows of round protrusions designed to help keep the blind and street traffic from having a collision. On Second Street, what look like rows of jagged teeth are really the facade of the St. Stephens Community Center. In the alleyways, you might see a man walking on a rusty wall, or a fading sign for services required very little, if at all. Look up behind the Tattered Book and you will see a circular stairway rising to the sky. In an alley close by, you can find rows of brick without any mortar and wonder why.

GRAND ISLAND —

Downtown Grand Island has many hidden details among the larger scenes. Some are off the beaten track; some are in plain view -- if you'll only look.
