Voice of the Game: Ord's Walt Smith to honored by the NCA

If you're talking about play-by-play voices in this part of the state, Walt Smith has to be one of the first names to come up. Now Smith, 72, is being honored with the Nebraska Coaches Association Media award this weekend in Lincoln.

St. Paul faces quick turnaround in Class B state tournament

The St. Paul juniors won their district championship Wednesday night in Central City. Less than 48 hours later, they  will be in Nebraska City taking on the host team at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the first round of the double-elimination Class B American Legion Juniors State Tournament..

Dex Schwieger stands tall among his Shrine Bowl South squad teammates. At 6-foot-5, the Aurora graduate is the tallest of the 35 players who have been practicing at Doane College for Saturday's game.

Ryba eager to play once more for prep football coach

The timing almost couldn't be better for Grand Island Senior High graduate Dalton Ryba. The 6-foot, 225-pound guard/linebacker will participate in the 2008 Shrine Bowl, the same year that Islander head coach Jeff Tomlin leads the North team. For Ryba, the chance to play one more game for Tomlin means a lot.


G.I.'s debut in Babe Ruth baseball going well

Grand Island's first season being involved in Babe Ruth League baseball has been a successful one on the field. Things have gone fairly smoothly off the field, too. Three G.I. teams will begin Babe Ruth regional play over the next week.
