- The Matchup
When Nebraska has the ball
You can expect another large dose of Ameer Abdullah when the Huskers have the ball. The Junior I-back has been the one consistent force for the Nebraska offense this season. Penn State has been OK against the run at 144 per game (sixth in the Big Ten), but the Huskers were able to run on a stout Michigan State defense last week. The key for the Huskers, obviously, is to cut down the turnovers. If they have five again this week, Penn State will be celebrating its seventh win of the season.
When Penn St. has the ball
Penn State freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg has thrown for 2,399 yards and 14 TDs, but he’s also thrown nine interceptions as well. The Penn State rushing offense is ninth in the Big Ten (179.2 yards per game) and the Nittany Lions or fifth in total offense (434.6). The Husker defense has been playing better of late, and this could be a good matchup for them. NU leads the conference in sacks (3.2 per game) while Penn State is eighth in sacks allowed (2.1 per game). It may be a prett even matchup.
The Nittany Lions are again ineligible for a bowl game, so this is their bowl game. It’s the last home game for a group of seniors that have been through a lot in their four or five years with the program, and they’re going to want to go out with a win. The Huskers have beaten Penn State the past two years, so you know the Lions will want some revenge. On the other side, Nebraska is basically playing for pride and the best bowl game it can get at this point. The Huskers may have a bit of an edge in the field goals.
EDGE: PENN STATE
Overall outlook: This should be another close, hard-fought game. Penn State is solid, but no part of their team scares you.
PREDICTION: NEBRASKA 24, PEN STATE 20.
