LINCOLN — Seeking immediate improvement over last week’s dreary performance against Wyoming, Nebraska’s defensive coaching staff didn’t let age nor experience determine its starting lineup on Saturday against Southern Miss.
After allowing 602 total yards in a 37-34 season-opening win over the Cowboys, the Cornhuskers started true freshmen Josh Banderas and Nathan Gerry at its middle and weakside linebacker positions, respectively. The duo became the first true freshmen to start on defense for Nebraska since Ciante Evans in 2010 as NU rolled to a 56-13 victory at Memorial Stadium.
