Crusader girls second;
D-T's Lemek medalist
KEARNEY -- The Grand Island Central Catholic girls golf team opened its season Thursday with a runner-up finish in the Kearney Catholic Invitational.
The Crusaders shot 399 as a team, finishing 15 strokes behind host Kearney Catholic at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course.
Maegan Kellogg led four GICC medalists, placing fifth with a 93. Crusaders Mikayla Northup (seventh with a 100), Michaela Ostdiek (eighth with a 101) and Kylee Flaherty (13th with a 105) also earned medals.
"It was really foggy to start the day and then it was really windy so some of the scores were a little higher than we would've liked, but we were really pleased to have four players medal," GICC coach Dee Hanssen said. "This is the first time our program has come home with a team trophy in quite a while, so they're really excited. I'm really proud of them."
Doniphan-Trumbull freshman Danielle Lemek shot a 74 to win individual medalist honors by seven strokes. St. Paul's Shelby Stone was second with an 81.

LEXINGTON -- Grand Island Northwest opened the season with two losses Thursday at Lexington.
Lexington won the opener 3-1. Kelsey Sherer took the loss for the Vikings.
The Minute Maids won the second game 12-4. The game was shortened to five innings because of the eight-run rule.
GINW coach Mike Witt said Kelsey Scherer pitched very well in the opener with three strikeouts and no walks.
"We're a young team," Witt said. "We understand that we're going to have to go through growing pains. I felt our girls really stepped up and did a lot of things well tonight."
