GRAND ISLAND —

As I sit awake at night listening to the many crackles and booms in our neighborhood, I thought what a great time to write a letter to the editor expressing my opinion about the city code regarding fireworks.  I actually went to the trouble to look up the code when someone told me it was legal to shoot off fireworks until 11pm from June 27th to July 3rd.  I would have lost that bet if I had doubted their word.

I wonder if anyone shooting off fireworks up to 11pm and after has to get up and go to work in the morning.? My guess is probably not.  I also wonder how many other people are wide awake just like me and wondering why we can't get a more reasonable time (say 10pm) for some peace and quiet during the work week.  Most first-shift employees start work between 6 and 9 a.m.

My last question is where are the parents that are letting their kids shoot off fireworks so late at night?  Looking down the block last night, I saw mostly kids in the street.  Where's Mom or Dad?  I sent my city council representatives an e-mail to express my concerns.  I would encourage anyone else that wants an earlier "cease fire" time to do the same.   I am all for enjoying  the fireworks and having a good time.  I do have some problems when the "good time" interferes with the "sleep time”.   If we all take the time to contact our city council representative, our voices may be heard over the late night noise.
