Friday night I had the opportunity to see true community spirit in action. The Piccadilly Players one again have taken mere dusty, dry words and brought them to life in a most profound and personal way. "The Spitfire Grill" opened in the GISH Little Theatre.
The Piccadilly Players were founded by Norbert Wenzl, Jeanne Mueller, and Mark Gloor to put on theatrical productions to benefit local fine arts organizations. They find a musical, invite the cast, and create magic on stage. The quality of this performance was suburb. Local celebrities with a passion for the arts made us laugh, cry and look to our memories as they acted and sang at the "Grill" I have to name all of the players because they all were just right for the parts. Calla Lomax has the drive, ability, and intensity to become one of the coming generations' stars. Her performance was inspired. My friend, Dave Hulinsky used his strong voice to give life to the pain of not quite measuring up in life. Grant Pyper has the ability to harmonize with anyone. When Crystal Kuzma sang "Wild Bird" it brought tears to my eyes. Wendy Carson and Linda Adler have been showing their abilities on Grand Island's stages for some time. Their chemistry is very appealing. Greg Ulmer has been allowing kids to find their talent for over 15 years, if was fun at first to see him on stage, by the end of the play, my memories of the 70's were crystal clear in my mind again.
"The Spitfire Grill" is being performed again this next weekend. 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday; proceeds benefit the GISH Fine Arts Board. Go see it for the art, go see it for the music, go for the donation, go for the memories it rekindles, but go see it!
