GRAND ISLAND —

Nance County veterans realized a dream Friday with the dedication of the Nance County Veterans Memorial.

After years of dreams and plans, the memorial has come together in the shape of seven walls featuring 1,000 bricks with the names and ranks of the many veterans from Nance County who have served their country in time of war.

These veterans truly deserve this honor and the community spirit shown in Fullerton and Nance County is admirable.

Community members gave sweat and time working on the wall, donated materials, supplies and money toward the project.

We congratulate Nance County on this beautiful tribute to this country's heroes. Their labors will keep the memories of these men and women alive for generations to come.

The Nance County Veterans Memorial is an effort truly worthy of a salute.

Also deserving a pat on the back are all the volunteer firefighters and others who supervised fireworks displays last night.

These people work behind the scenes, in the dark, so others can enjoy beautiful aerial displays. It can be a dangerous job, but it's oh so important.

Without these volunteers, the safety of others would be in jeopardy and many communities wouldn't be able to have their annual Fourth of July celebrations.

We may not realize it, but there is a lot of care and work that go into these displays.

For its first year, the Unity Walk last Saturday was a rousing success. The effort by the Multicultural Coalition brought people from throughout the community together for a stroll through downtown Grand Island.

It was the kind of event displaying a unified spirit that we hope to see more of in the years to come. It was the first step, make that many steps, in the right direction for a community that features a wealth of cultural backgrounds.
