LETTER: County board’s actions are questioned

GRAND ISLAND —

Actions by the county board of supervisors raise concerns as the county seems to be headed in the same direction as the city council. Several questions of fair, consistent and good plain common sense raise concerns about the board's actions.

It seems the county constantly whines about their tight budget. To give the jail director a whopping $10,000 raise, all at one shot, seems to show little sense at this time. First, when only one department employee is given such a big jump at one time, it leaves others working for the county to feel a slight or snub by the county for the efforts they put in on the job. Second, the county could find no funds in the past to pave a couple miles of South Locust for school busses and our neighbors to the south.

I will not argue that to oversee the jail construction didn't merit the jail director some kind of bonus. Most football coaches get a one time bonus added to their salary for winning a bowl or conference championship. It seems the county board could have been more responsible with less a slap in the face to others had they given the jail director a one time thank you bonus, and adjusted salaries gradually in the future.

The county board has been bullied by Pam Lancaster and others long enough. The county's actions seem no more fair or consistent than the city's anymore. I cannot vote for Gary Quandt in my district, but maybe a vote for him by those that can, would right in  this situation.
