Small towns are refuges for freedom
Watchful citizens key to health care reform
This is in continuing support for effective and affordable health care for all Americans. I am among the many who believe a single payer approach is better. These programs, competently managed, can ensure health care for all at costs much lower than our current for profit system.
Mayor discusses State Fair plan and city odor

Too big to fail or too small to matter?
Rushed health care proposals fall short
Americans need true health care reform, and members of Congress agree that this issue must be addressed. The Administration has promised several things: everyone will have access to health care; everyone will get to keep their insurance plan if they want; and the government will be responsible with taxpayers’ money. The President has also repeatedly promised that while he is President there will be no increase in taxes for the middle class. Any plan that falls short of these goals is highly inadequate and does not give the American people solutions they deserve.

From the library: Teens celebrate diversity at the library

The Unity Walk is an opportunity for the community to show its support and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our community.

From the library: It’s a dad’s life at the library
These days we see a lot more dads coming to the library with their children. Accompanying them to story times, summer reading program events, playdays in our Early Literacy Discovery Center, or even to read side by side in our teacup chairs.

Continued Iranian turbulance can’t alter U.S. stance
On Tuesday President Obama, in his strongest comment yet on the problems in Iran, pointed out that there were "significant questions about the legitimacy" of the election and clearly rejected the suggestions that the United States had a hand in the current crisis. The Iran government mentioned that the United States and the "Zionists" are responsible for this turmoil. "These accusations are patently false and absurd" Obama said. And he added "this tired strategy of using old tensions to scapegoat other countries won’t work anymore in Iran."
Odor problem needs a solution this summer

How many people reading this letter know or have heard of the following: NAFTA, NAU, SPPNA? It seems unthinkable, but so did 9/11 before it happened. NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Treaty, NAU is the North American Union and SPPNA is Strategic and Prosperity Partnership of North America. It is a program designed to merge slowly but surely Mexico, North America and Canada. Thanks to Council members for determination
To City Council members John Gericke, Larry Carney and Peg Gillbert: thank you so much for your determination to ask questions, time spent digging deeper for the answers, and willingness to listen to the people. Gilbert recognized the need for open discussions and now Gericke and Carney have gone above and beyond to get her original amendment back on record and into the daily workings of the council. We are lucky to have you representing us!
Another tea party to be in G.I.
Are you aware of how many tea parties are going on accross the country this fourth of July? I think it’s obvious that people are not happy with the current administration. I’ve never known Americans to take to the streets like that except for a few flaky war protesters in the 60’s. Even then, the crowds were not that large. Something is brewing alright and it’s not tea. I heard that in Chesepeake, Va, they are expecting 5000 people or so and that’s only one city. There are hundreds of tea parties planned accross the country. Why aren’t we hearing about it on the news?? Ha Ha, as if I didn’t know.
Concerned about food poisoning
What ever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on the 4th of July were traffic jams and wayward fireworks? According to the USDA’s Meat & Poultry Hot-line, this year’s top threat is food poisoning by nasty E. coli and Salmonella bugs lurking in hamburgers and hot dogs at millions of backyard barbecues. The Hotline’s advice is to grill them longer and hotter. Of course, they don’t bother to mention that the high-temperature grilling that kills the bugs also forms lots of cancer-causing compounds.
Upset with library, tattoos and kids
I wonder who is the nuttiest. Library employees who have nothing better to do (paid by taxpayers money) than scribble on teenagers bodies or the kids who want to look like a Third World, tattooed, side-show freak. Obviously, if they were Christians, they would know their body is the temple to the Holy Spirit and should not be defaced. Are these kids so ugly they need decorations on their bodies so others will admire them? I guess so.

Solar and wind energy are smart investments
Renewable energy should not be thought of as a political issue, rather a way of using history to protect our future. The old fashion ways of using wind and water to generate energy is not out dated. In fact there are new advancements that make natural energy sources increasingly more efficient. These renewable sources such as wind and solar power have benefits that outweigh those of non-renewable. Renewable energy creates affordable, regionally produced power that never runs out of supply, while creating local jobs for retail, manufacturing, and installation. This will reduce our dependency on foreign resources while protecting our environment and the beautiful state we live in.

There was a famous athlete who once bragged that he was so fast that he could turn off the lights and be in bed before the room got dark. That’s fast, and not a bad description of how quickly I felt my first legislative session sped by. Of course, time flies when you are busy. I left my CEO position at the hospital so that I could devote all my efforts toward being a busy Senator. I believe the success I have had my first year (e.g. getting most of my bills passed) is representative of staying busy and of the effort and energy I put into being your representative in the Unicameral.
Costly police and fire department hires
SURPRISE!! Our City Council thinks hiring six more firefighters and four more police officers is a "no-brainer." I agree…they are betting that Grand Island taxpayers are not using their brains. This stimulus package "freebie" is anything but free. Just like the GM and Chrysler bailouts, this is a thinly veiled gift to the unions at the expense of the taxpayer, which is exactly what our Federal Government has in mind. I have great respect for both firefighters and police officers. We just can’t afford any more.
Lack of direct communication again flaws the budget process
t is during these times of the H1N1 or "swine flu" virus, the West Nile virus, areas of water contamination and illnesses from improperly prepared or stored food, that the services of public health agencies such as the Central District Health Department are particularly important.
