Online readers of theindependent.com may have run into a lot of 'Page not found' errors this past week when searching for old stories. The paper is undergoing a transition to a new archiving system and readers will continue to experience missing page errors until the new archve system is in place.
During the interim, The Independent set up a temporary archive dating back to June of 2007 to serve immediate reader needs while they transfer over ten years of articles and files to the new system. You can click here to reach those temporary archives, or you can find it by clicking on 'News Archive' in the sub-navigation links under the 'Home' tab across the top of the page.
The Independent expects the full archives to be back up within the next two weeks. Unfortunately, this transition has meant that there will be a lot of links that return the 'missing page' error.
Eventually, search engines like Google will recrawl and relink the new archive structure when it is up and running and the dead links will be removed.
Another issue with the transition is that a number of websites often link to articles published online. Any websites that do this will need to change their links to those Independent stories once the archive is back online.
