Former Grand Island City Councilman Glen Murray has turned in petitions he circulated to run for the Hall County Board of Supervisors.
He needed 366 valid signatures to get on the November ballot to run against Gary Quandt in District 6. Murray submitted more than 380 signatures on Friday to the Hall County election commissioner's office.
"We'll try to get through these as fast as we can," election assistant Denice Kruse said.
She estimated that signature verification would be complete by the end of next week.
Normally, Murray would have had until Sept. 1 to gather the signatures. But because that day is a holiday, Kruse said, Murray had until 5 p.m. Sept. 2 to file the petitions.
If his petition is successful, Murray's name will be listed on the November ballot as "Glen Murray (by petition)."
His opponent, Quandt, is the Republican nominee. Quandt defeated incumbent Supervisor Bob Humiston in the Republican primary.
Murray is legally allowed to petition on the ballot as a Democrat because the Democratic Party had no candidate in the May primary.
Murray had considered running for county board in the primary but was so involved with the spring Democratic caucuses that he didn't get filed.
He previously served on the Grand Island City Council for 12 years from 1990 to 2002. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2002.
