GRAND ISLAND

Woman charged for hitting man with car

A Grand Island woman has been charged with felony assault for hitting a man with her car as he tried to repossess it.

Rae Lynn Mars, 38, of 502 W. Charles, was taken into custody on a warrant at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, according to Hall County Jail records. She's charged with second-degree assault and using a vehicle to commit a felony for the June 9 incident involving Servio Diaz.

Diaz, 35, was taking a photo of the orange 2004 Ford Mustang at Mars' home when she ran outside, got in and struck him as she drove away, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Diaz and another man, William Woodward, were preparing to repossess the vehicle because Mars was behind on the payments, according to police.

Woodward had made contact with Mars, who became very upset and ran from the home. She got in the car and he told her not to hit Diaz, but Mars responded by saying, "I'll run over him." Diaz held up his hands and told her to stop before she drove forward and struck him. She then drove away, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Diaz suffered cuts and scrapes and complained of back pain, police said.

Officers also spoke to another person who witnessed the incident, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Mars was released on her own recognizance and must return to Hall County Court for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Aug. 4.

Following the prison term, Zavala will serve five years of supervised release and he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment, according to the release.

Antiques Appraisal Fair date changed

Due to scheduling conflicts, Habitat for Humanity's Antiques Appraisal Fair has been moved to 1 to 5 p.m. July 19 at the Railroard Towne Antique Mall in downtown Grand Island.

The appraisal fair will be an opportunity for people to learn more about items they've inherited or acquired, all while helping Habitat raise money to build a home for a deserving family.

For each $10 donation to Habitat at the event, certified antique appraisers Tom and Sue Davis will professionally appraise one item. People may bring multiple items for appraisal for insurance or resale purposes. In previous years, items have ranged from glassware to war memorabilia, from artwork to furniture, and everything in between.

"Each year, we get people at the event that simply want to learn more about an item they have, plus folks looking to insure or sell what they have," said Dana Jelinek of Habitat for Humanity. "We encourage folks to look for items they'd like to bring."

For more information about the event, contact the Railroad Towne Antique Mall at Third and Walnut, 398-2222.

Proceeds from the Antiques Appraisal Fair will help pay for construction costs on the affiliate's 48th home, which is this year's All Church Build.
