GRAND ISLAND —

An ambulance responding to an accident on Faidley Avenue contributed to a second accident on Webb Road on Monday afternoon.

Chung Hoa Huynh, 37, of Grand Island, was driving north on Webb Road in a 2004 Mazda Tribute when he hit the brakes as an ambulance approached. When he stopped, the Tribute was struck from behind by a 1993 Kenworth gravel truck driven by Joseph Wieck Sr., 58, of Grand Island, said police Capt. Robert Falldorf.

The Tribute was totaled and the truck had $2,500 to $3,000 in damage, he said.

The impact pushed the Tribute forward far enough that the ambulance was able to drive between them and respond to the accident on Faidley Avenue, he said.

Huynh and Wieck were both restrained and Huynh told emergency personnel he lost consciousness. He also complained of back and neck pain and was transported to St. Francis Medical Center.

The first accident, which occurred at 3:35 p.m., involved a 1989 Lincoln Towncar and a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, Falldorf said.

Magaly Shields-Escobedo, 23, of Grand Island, was stopped at a stop sign in the southbound lane of Faidley Place. The driver of a van that was going west in the outside lane of Faidley Avenue waved Shields-Escobedo to turn, Falldorf said.

The van obscured Shields-Escobedo's view of the Lincoln, which was slowing down in the westbound turning lane of Faidley Avenue as the driver, Anthony Matero, prepared to turn left onto Webb Road, Falldorf said.

The pickup and the Lincoln collided, totaling the Lincoln and causing about $2,000 damage to the pickup, he said.

Matero, 19, of Grand Island, cut his eye and head. Shields-Escobedo complained of ankle pain. Both of them were transported to St. Francis. A passenger in Shields-Escobedo's vehicle wasn't injured, Falldorf said.
