GRAND ISLAND —

A Grand Island police officer was treated and released from St. Francis Medical Center Thursday afternoon after suffering bites from a police canine.

Grand Island Police Capt. Pete Kortum said the incident happened at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, when police officer Eric Javins was with the dog at the Law Enforcement Training Center for routine maintenance and training of the dog.

Kortum said Javins was bitten in the left hand and upper right arm by the dog, a Belgian Malinois.

A an adult male Belgian Malinois can weigh up to 75 pounds, and it looks similar to a German shepherd.

Kortum said Javins made his own call for assistance from the ambulance. He said Javins then was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
