HASTINGS —

Central Community College-Hastings honored 395 graduating students May 10 during its 41st annual commencement ceremonies.

David S. Finn, Caterpillar Corporation's product support manager for North America, was the keynote speaker.

Campus President Bill Hitesman presented the candidates for graduation to CCC President Dr. LaVern Franzen, who conferred the degrees and diplomas.

Also as part of the ceremony, Gregg Bostelman of Grand Island received the 2008 Outstanding Alumni Award during commencement activities May 10 at Central Community College-Hastings.

Bostelman received a diploma in commercial horticulture from the Hastings Campus in 1976.

Following graduation, he worked as assistant golf course superintendent for the Grand Island Municipal Golf Course, now known as Jackrabbit Run until 1992. Since then, he has been employed by the Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department serving as Park Superintendent.

He is a member of the Nebraska Turfgrass Association, National Sports Turf Manager's Association, Nebraska Arborist Association, Nebraska Parks and Recreation Association and National Parks and Recreation Association. He was instrumental in forming the Nebraska Sports Turf Manager's Association in 2000 and served as its founding president for more than two years.

In 2007, he was the primary organizer for the Nebraska Sports Turf Manager's Association's "Extreme Makeover" field day at St. Paul High School.

During the event, professionals demonstrated how to square up ball fields, painted the high school logo on the football field, installed an irrigation system on the baseball field, rebuilt the pitcher's mound, edged the baselines and reconditioned the infield and baselines. It was a valuable learning experience for everyone who attended and it resulted in major improvements for the sports fields at no cost to the St. Paul school system or city.

Bostelman also serves as a Little League baseball coach, and a basketball and soccer coach at the YMCA; has helped build at least six houses for Habitat for Humanity; and is an active member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island.
