Destined for 25 Marines in Afghanistan, front desk receptionist Kitty Vandeberg holds some of the many items donated by staff members and program participants at Goodwill Industries in Grand Island. Instead of a Christmas gift exchange, it was agreed to send the gifts to the Marines, many of whom are in their first deployment in Afghanistan. (Independent/Barrett Stinson)

Several years ago, employees of the operations department at Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska decided to forego the gift exchange among each other and instead try to provide for others more in need.
Since the beginning of that new tradition, an ever-increasing number of Goodwill employees and Goodwill program participants have started thinking outside their immediate circle when planning Christmas gifts.
