The Grand Island City Council will consider whether to create a protected class for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people through a local ordinance Tuesday night.

If the ordinance passes, it would be illegal in Grand Island to fail to hire or promote based on sexual orientation. It would be illegal to fail to rent or sell a house to a person based on sexual orientation. It would also be illegal to fail to sell food or other items or fail to wait on a person in any business in the city due to a person's sexual orientation.
