COLLEGE WOMEN'S GOLF

Husker newcomers play well at major national events

LINCOLN -- Nebraska women's golf incoming freshmen Natalie Gleadall and Maddie Shiels have performed well at major national junior events this week. Gleadall sits in a tie for 10th through three rounds at the Royale Canadian Junior Girls Championship, while Shiels finished in a tie for 11th at the Trusted Choice Big ``I`` Junior Classic.

Gleadall, a native of Stratford, Ontario, has fired consistent rounds of 75, 76 and 75 to sit at 226 entering Friday's final round at the St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg. Gleadall is six strokes back of tournament co-leaders Nicole Vandermade and SooBin Kim (220).

Gleadall, who competed last week at the Canadian Amateur Championships, advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Western Golf Association National Junior Championships at the Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind.

Shiels, a native of Boise, Idaho, produced an impressive 11th-place showing at the 2008 Trusted Choice Big ``I`` in Pinehurst, N.C. Shiels closed one of the nation's most pretigious junior tournaments with a final-round 76 at the Country Club of North Carolina on Thursday. Shiels ended the tournament with a four-round total of 308 (73-83-76-76).

One of the most highly touted recruits in Husker history, Shiels won the Big ``I`` Junior Classic at the Crane Creek Country Club in Boise last summer. She was ranked 29th in the Polo Golf rankings for the Class of 2008.

Shiels and Gleadall are set to begin their Husker careers later this month. The University of Nebraska begins fall classes in Lincoln on Monday, Aug. 25. The Husker women's golf team opens the fall schedule of competition by playing host to the Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness, Sept. 15-16.
