Midland Lutheran announces dean's, president's lists

FREMONT -- Midland Lutheran College named 148 students to the dean's list for the spring 2008 term, including 47 members honored on the president's list.

Students from Central Nebraska who made the president's list are Amanda Chytka of Broken Bow, Madalyn Regier of Henderson and Jordan Meyer of St. Paul.

Students from Central Nebraska who made the dean's list are Cody Nelson and Dustin Riggins of Arcadia; Allison Kuszak of Dannebrog; Eric Frenzen of Fullerton; and Geoffrey Buchta, Janel Buchta and Mallory Pinger of Grand Island.

Students named to the dean's list have completed all course requirements and earned a grade point average of 3.5 or above with a minimum of 12 credit hours. Those named to the president's list earned a 4.0 under the same criteria.



UNK Alpha Phis named Top 10 Chapter


KEARNEY -- The Alpha Phi women's fraternity at the University of Nebraska at Kearney was named a Top 10 Chapter out of 147 Alpha Phi chapters across North America.

Members from Central Nebraska include Klarissa Bellamy, Rachel Hernandez, Liz Ryan, Bekah Schimonitz, Lea Schneider and Courtney Zook, all of Grand Island; and Brittany Davidson, Krista Hollister, Emilee Lonowski, Ashley McWhirter and Emily South, all of Hastings.

The chapter was inducted into the Order of the Lamp in July at the fraternity's international convention in Scottsdale, Ariz. The chapter received 10 additional awards for its excellence in chapter programming, recruitment, philanthropy, service and finance.



Students earn distinction at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State University has announced the names of about 1,900 students, including six from Central Nebraska, who were named to the WSU dean's honor roll for spring 2008.

Central Nebraska students on the list are Abby Bartlett, Megan Bartlett, Laura Leisinger and Christina Patton, all of Grand Island; and Ashley Stone and Kaelee Stone, both of Palmer.

To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.



Honors

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) has selected Juan Cangas of Grand Island, a senior at the University of Nebraska, among 31 university students from across the nation to participate in CHCI's Congressional Internship Program. CHCI interns are assigned to congressional offices on Capitol Hill for eight weeks from June to August to learn firsthand about the legislative process and issues pending before the U.S. House of Representatives. Cangas is majoring in psychology and would like to pursue a career in law.

Mallory Pinger, a 2006 Grand Island Central Catholic graduate, recently graduated from the ROTC's Leadership Training Course in Fort Knox, Ky. Pinger received an award for the highest physical fitness score out of more than 220 men and women cadets. The Army considers a score of 300 to be "maxing out," and Pinger scored a 349 on her physical fitness test, which included, sit-ups, push-ups and a two-mile run. Pinger, a student at Midland Lutheran College, is part of the Creighton ROTC program.



Graduates

Kaelee Stone of Palmer was among 1,400 students who completed their degrees at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan., in spring 2008. Stone graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of business administration, majoring in entrepreneurship.

Shannon O'Neill of Grand Island graduated June 7 with a bachelor's degree in health care management from Bellevue University in Omaha. O'Neill is a 4004 graduate of Grand Island Senior High and the daughter of Colleen and Gordon O'Neill.



Scholarships

Bridget Czaplewski of Grand Island, a senior at Chadron State College, has received the Doris Gates Memorial Scholarship valued at $326 and the Minnie E. Lichte Memorial Endowment Scholarship of $425. Czaplewski is a 2005 graduate of Grand Island Central Catholic High School. Her parents are Mark and Rita Czaplewski of Grand Island.
