Northwest graduate elected president of Phi Beta Lambda

Mike Kistler, son of Ben and Gail Kistler of Grand Island, was recently elected national president of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) at the organization's annual National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

Kistler, a Grand Island Northwest graduate and past president of the Grand Island Northwest FBLA chapter, will lead this 11,000-member strong nationwide organization and will serve on their board of directors. Kistler now attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

As PBL national president, Kistler's duties include representing the organization and Nebraska at numerous conferences and events across the nation. He will begin by attending the national officers' leadership training program in Reston, Va., later this month to develop a work program for the organization for the upcoming year.

Phi Beta Lambda is the college division of FBLA-PBL, which focuses on bringing business and education together through leadership and career programs.





UNL students attend, compete at national conference

Thirteen University of Nebraska-Lincoln Phi Beta Lambda students attended and competed at the National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

UNL PBL members combined for 23 awards, including four first place awards. Area winners included:

Accounting for Professionals: Mike Kistler, Grand Island, second; Database Design and Applications: Tyler Lemburg, Dannebrog, second; and Financial Services: Tim Echtenkamp, Cairo, and Lemburg, second.

The UNL chapter won the recruitment video contest, was recognized for being the second largest local chapter in the Mountain Plains Region and received the Outstanding Local Chapter award.



Students to join in Nebraska at Oxford

LINCOLN -- Sixty-four University of Nebraska-Lincoln students are scheduled to participate in the 20th annual Nebraska at Oxford Program July 20 through Aug. 16 at England's University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Sponsored by the UNL College of Business Administration, the program is open to students of all academic majors, including graduate students and undergraduate students with at least sophomore standing.

During the four-week program, students can take two lecture-tutorial courses on British political and international economic policy, "Political Economy of Britain Since 1945" and "International Economics and Business," for six hours of UNL academic credit. Non-business students can enroll in "Theatre, Arts and Literature of Great Britain" instead of "International Economics and Business."

Students from Central Nebraska planning to participate in Nebraska at Oxford are:

Laura Kusek of Albion, senior, business administration, daughter of Dr. Anthony and Carol Kusek; Jessica Simons of Albion, senior, marketing, daughter of Dick Simons of Omaha and Trina Hellbusch of Albion; Brandon Cornett of Aurora, sophomore, marketing, son of Don and Myra Cornett;

Brenton Nesbitt of Grand Island, junior, marketing, son of Roger and Deborah Nesbitt; Jim Ediger of Hampton, sophomore, accounting, son of Randy and Jan Ediger; Will Boyd of Hastings, sophomore, history, son of Bill and Martha Boyd; and Kristin Hiebner of Henderson, sophomore, nutrition, exercise and health science/pre-physical therapy, daughter of Lowell and Susanne Hiebner.



Students receive Hastings College scholarships

HASTINGS -- Area students have received scholarships to attend Hastings College for the 2008-09 academic year.

Alicia Statler of St. Libory received a Tom McLaughlin Athletic Scholarship and a basketball scholarship. Daughter of Greg and Lurleen Statler, Alicia attended Grand Island Central Catholic. She plans to major in biology.

Kylie Lyon of Doniphan received an academic scholarship and a McClelland Music Scholarship. Daughter of Troy and Sandra Lyon, Kylie attended Grand Island Senior High. She plans to major in music education and elementary education.

Crystal Prawl of Grand Island received academic, media and legacy scholarships. She also received a McClelland Music Scholarship. Daughter of Donald II and Charlotte Prawl, Crystal attended Grand Island Senior High. She plans to major in vocal music and English education.





Hastings College student officers, senators named

HASTINGS -- Hastings College students were selected in May to serve as Student Association officers, executive council members and senators. Those elected will serve during the 2008-09 academic year.

Central Nebraska students elected to offices, their parents and their hometowns include:

Scholarships

Two Grand Island students have earned scholarships at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Emilee Bruns, daughter of Renae Bruns, has received the $1,000 Younkers Farm Aid Scholarship. The Northwest High School graduate plans to major in biochemistry as a freshman at UNL. Brent Moravec, son of Mark and Judy Moravec, has received the $1,000 David H. and Annie E. Larrick Scholarship. The Grand Island Central Catholic graduate plans to major in biochemistry as a freshman at UNL.



Graduates

Douglas McBride of Grand Island graduated in May from William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., with a master of education degree. McBride is the son of Donald and Patty McBride of Grand Island. More than 540 students received diplomas on May 9 and 10.

 Christopher Buller of Henderson graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the School of Law at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind. Valparaiso is a university with a Lutheran heritage that enrolls nearly 4,000 students on its campus 55 miles southeast of Chicago.



Academic honors

Michelle Foote of Hastings has been named to the president's list at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Foote achieved this academic honor by earning a straight-A grade-point average of 4.0 during the spring semester.

Margaret Andersen, daughter of Marvin and Pam Andersen of Grand Island, has been named to the dean's list at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., for the 2007-08 school year. The dean's list recognizes students with grade-point averages of 3.333 or above. Andersen graduated from Grand Island Senior High and is majoring in medieval studies and English at Smith.
