UNK summer commencement to graduate nearly 200
KEARNEY -- Nearly 200 students from 15 states and two countries make up the summer class of 2008 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and will receive their degrees and diplomas at the summer commencement ceremony on Aug. 1.
Summer commencement exercises will begin at 10 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room of the Nebraskan Student Union. Students from Central Nebraska who will be among the graduates:

Central Nebraska students earn Bellevue University degrees
OMAHA -- Six Central Nebraska students were among 611 receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bellevue University during spring commencement on June 7 in the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
Central Nebraska graduates and the degrees they earned:
Kelle Jo Callahan of Grand Island, bachelor of science in human and social services administration; Christina P. Nickel of Grand Island, master of health care administration; Stephanie J. Mulligan of Grand Island, master of health care administration;
Drew A. Stark of Hastings, bachelor of science in business administration; Charlotte Hall of Spalding, master of business administration-management; and Russell Rimovsky of St. Edward, bachelor of science in management.
UNK names College Fellows
KEARNEY -- Four students from the Grand Island area have been named a College Fellows for the 2008-09 academic year at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The selections were made by the College of Natural and Social Sciences at UNK. Area students named include Kalie Wetovick of Fullerton, Department of History; and Amanda Calleroz, Department of Biology; Carl Corder, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Matthew Morehouse, Department of Political Science, all of Kearney.
College Fellows are students nominated by departments on the basis of their scholastic achievement, as well as their talent for, and interest in, becoming a college or university professor.
CCC-Hastings students take part in intern program
HASTINGS -- Five Central Nebraska students in their first year of the medical lab technology program at Central Community College-Hastings will be completing internships this summer.
Grand Island students in the program are Jesse Houdek, Kearney County Health Center in Minden, and Lena Morris, Internal Medical Associates in Grand Island.
Other area students taking part are Rachel Crawford of Hastings, Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva; Mandy Smith of Sargent, Harlan County Health System in Alma; and Michaela Dvorak of Wood River, Family Practice in Grand Island.
The internships, which run from July 14 through Aug. 8, will give these students an opportunity to apply their classroom lessons in a real clinical lab. They will see how the different areas they have studied -- hematology, urinalysis and immunology -- interact, as well as how they as individuals fit into the health care team.
Four area 2008 graduates of the medical lab technology program are also completing internships this summer.
These individuals have finished their course work and are completing internship rotations for four weeks at two clinical sites in Nebraska and Kansas as a capstone experience.
Their first internships ran from May 12 through June 9, and their second internships are ran from June 10 through July 8. Both clinical sites are listed with each student. Central Nebraska students with internships are:
-- Kandi Ryan of Broken Bow, a 2008 graduate with an associate of applied science degree in medical laboratory technology, with internships at Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow and Tri County Hospital in Lexington.
-- Tranella McCoy of Grand Island, a 2008 graduate with an associate of applied science degree in medical laboratory technology, with internships at Henderson Community Hospital in Henderson and St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point.
-- Alicia Disney-Cheyney of Hastings, a 2008 graduate with an associate of applied science degree in medical laboratory technology, with internships at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva and Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
-- Gretchen Smith of Hastings, a 2008 graduate with an associate of applied science degree in medical laboratory technology, with internships at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings and Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland, Kan.
Graduates
Among the 990 students who completed requirements for bachelor's and associate degrees during the spring semester at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan., are three from Central Nebraska. They are Lindsay Chavez of Grand Island, associate of science, radiologic technology; Kellyn Thaut of Hastings, bachelor of arts, communication; and Bridget Ziola of Phillips, associate of science, radiologic technology.
Two Central Nebraska students graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, at the conclusion of the spring semester. They are Katherine McDermott of Doniphan, bachelor of science, biochemistry and molecular biology, College of Arts and Sciences; and Aaron Plond of Grand Island, bachelor of business administration, accounting/management, College of Business and Public Administration.
Academic honors
Leslie Cunningham of Grand Island has been named to the dean's list for the spring quarter at DePaul University in Chicago. To be named to the dean's list, a full-time student must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a four-point scale.
Joel Frandsen has been named a Dimmitt Scholar at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Dimmitt Scholars must be full-time students who have completed 45 credits with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 to 3.75. A junior majoring in political science, Frandsen is a graduate of Grand Island Central Catholic and the son of Roger and Julie Frandsen of Grand Island,
Katherine McDermott of Doniphan and Aaron Plond of Grand Island have been named to the dean's list at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. They achieved this academic honor by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher during the spring 2008 semester at Drake.
Three Central Nebraska students have earned honor roll distinction for the spring semester at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. They are Laura Brown Whitney of Aurora, liberal arts undergraduate, sophomore, daughter of William and Jan Whitney, Aurora High School graduate; Lindsey Ann Shoemaker of Grand Island, fine arts undergraduate, senior, daughter of Zelda Shoemaker, Grand Island Senior High graduate; and Kara L. Knapp of Hastings, liberal arts undergraduate, senior, daughter of Randy and Brenda Knapp, Hastings Senior High graduate. Honor roll criteria vary among the university's academic units.
Four students from Central Nebraska were named to the 2008 spring semester dean's list at Iowa State University in Ames. They are Nathan Anderson of Clarks, fourth year, College of Engineering, mechanical engineering; Emily Griess of Grand Island, fifth year, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, agriculture specials; Ryan Boesch of Hastings, fourth year, College of Engineering, electrical engineering; and Cedric Wichmann of St. Paul, fourth year, College of Business, finance. Students named to the dean's list must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.
Lana Wilhelmy of Grand Island has been named to the dean's list at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., for the spring semester. The dean's list honors students who achieve a grade point average of 3.6 or greater. Wilhelmy is majoring in biblical and theological studies and is the daughter of Linda Wilhelmy.
Thomas Cleveland of Aurora has qualified for the dean's list at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh for the spring semester. To qualify for the dean's list, a student must take at least 12 credits and earn a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher.
Mark Waters, son of James and Sandra Waters of Grand Island, has been named a Roadman Scholar at Morningside College in recognition of high academic distinction for the 2007-08 academic year. Waters is a junior majoring in computer science. He is a graduate of Grand Island Senior High. Roadman Scholars must be full-time students who have completed at least 45 semester hours of college work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.76 or higher.
Activities
Four students from Central Nebraska competed in the National SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Kansas City, Mo. Scott Bohn of Gibbon, a student at Central Community College-Hastings, placed fourth in diesel technology. Other CCC students competing were Casey Stout of Burwell, welding, and David Shuck of Juniata, collision repair. Seth Teegerstrom of Stromsburg was a member of a team from Wayne State College that took fourth place in Postsecondary TeamWorks. SkillsUSA is a national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. The students were among 4,800 high school and postsecondary students from across the U.S. who earned the right to compete at the national level by placing first in their respective state
