Retiring CCC president receives award
KEARNEY -- LaVern Franzen of Hastings has received the 2008 Elaine Stuhr Leadership and Advocacy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award was presented on June 10 at the annual Nebraska Career Education Conference in Kearney.
Franzen, who is retiring as president of Central Community College, was honored for his commitment to advancing career education from the moment he joined the Hastings Campus staff as an accounting instructor in 1967.
Throughout his career, Franzen has encouraged teamwork and provided guidance and support for employees. The result has been a wide range of initiatives to expand career education opportunities throughout CCC's service area.
As associate dean of the Lexington Center from 1977-87, he developed an extensive system to provide career education and other services in Buffalo, Dawson, Gosper and Furnas counties.
While he was dean of instruction at the Grand Island Campus from 1987-96, the campus implemented paralegal studies, associate degree in nursing and manufacturing technology programs; opened the Center for Industry and Technology; and forged partnerships with outside entities to bring radiologic technology education and advanced automotive technology courses to the area.
As president of the Hastings Campus from 1996-2002, Franzen was a part of the following accomplishments: Establishing a drag racing club to provide learning experiences outside the class; organizing a campus chapter of SkillsUSA to enhance the occupational skills of students in communications, leadership and teamwork; opening Pooh Corner College to provide child care services for students and staff and practicum expod education students; and bringing a new medical laboratory technology program to the campus.
As college president, he oversaw the development of plans for a health and science building on the Grand Island Campus; the formation of partnerships with Southeast Community College to develop new health care education programs and with Mid-Plains Community College to develop a job training program for transportation, distribution, warehousing and logistics careers; completion of the Harlan Building to house the Hastings Campus truck driving program; the opening of a Mechatronics Center at the Columbus Campus; development of an online medical transcription training program; the adoption of a new accreditation process that allows CC to continuously evaluate itself; and the launching of a "Tech Talk" segment on NTV's "Good Life" program.
Franzen will retire on June 30.

CCC students earn scholarships
Ten Central Community College students have each received a $500 Students-at-a-Distance Scholarship.
The Central Community College Foundation provides the funding for the scholarship, which is available to CCC students who are working toward a diploma or degree and are taking courses at a distance.
Recipients completed at least six credit hours of individualized, satellite, video/IT or Web-based courses during the 2007-08 academic year with at least a 2.5 grade point average.
They must register for six or more credit hours for the 2008-09 year, with at least three of the credits in courses delivered at a distance.
Scholarship recipients from Central Nebraska include Megan Cuba of Genor, accounting; Christopher Davidson, business management; Sherrill McCune, academic transfer; and Amanda Demoret, medical assisting, all of Hastings; Nicole Malzacher of Kearney, academic transfer; and Dixie Codner of Wood River, library technical assistant.
Doane releases spring Dean's List
CRETE -- Doane College has announced students named to the Dean's List for Spring 2008. Students must achieve a minimum 3.7 grade point average on a 4.0 scale to qualify for this academic distinction.

Kelly Goertzen recently graduated from Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kan. Goertzen is a 1994 graduate of Northwest High School and the daughter of Butch Hemmer of Burwell and Shaawna Hemmer of Doniphan.
Jennifer Galvan of Grand Island has earned a master of science degree in nursing and master of health administration degree from the University of Phoenix during commencement ceremonies recently in Omaha.
A was awarded to William Goble, formerly of Grand Island, and Kirsten Buck Goble, of Ankeny, Iowa, were awarded doctor of osteopathic medicine degrees May 24 during the 108th annual commencement ceremonies at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Brandon is set ti begin a general surgery residency program and Kirsten a family practice residency program at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Adam J. Dalrymple of Grand Island has graduated from Southeast Community College with an associate of applied science degree in truck diesel technology.
Anne Roberts of Grand Island has recently graduated with a master's degre in physician assistant studies from Union College in Lincoln.
Paul Steinbeck of Grand Island recently received his doctorate in musicology from Columbia University in New York. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago in 2002. Steinbeck has accepted a two-year post doctoral position with the University of British Columbia at Vancouver. He is the son of Ken and Elaine Steinbeck of Grand Island.
Academic honors
Jason Ressler of Grand Island was named to the dean's list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for the 2008 spring quarter. He is a painting major. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the dean's list.
Dale Novotny of Grand Island and April Bock of Ravenna have been added to the 2008 spring semester University of Wyoming academic Dean's and Freshman Honor Roll. To be eligible, students must have been enrolled for a minimum of 12 creat hours and earned a 3.4 or better grade point average.
Justin Webb, O.D. was recently honored for completing a Fellowship in Research at the Southern California College of Optometry commencement ceremonies May 23 in Fullerton, Calif. He is a 1999 graduate of Grand Island Senior High School and the son of Marvin and Jeanne Webb of Grand island.
Chelsie Englund and Alex Witmer of Grand Island, Sara Jaeschke of Loup City and Rikole Santin of Palmer have been named to the Dean's List for the third term of the 2007-08 academic year at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.
Brock Joseph Emery of Grand Island was named to the Metropolitan Community College spring quarter dean's list, which had 2,507 students qualifying. To qualify for the dean's list, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours in graded 100 level or above classes, complete at least six credit hours in 100 level or above classes for the quarter in which they are qualifying and achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average. MCC is in Omaha.
April Ellison, Tiffany Cote and Jodi Spale have been named to the spring 2008 dean's list at Clarkson College in Omaha. All three are pursuing nursing degrees. Ellison is the daughter of Marlyn and Donna Busher; Cote is the daughter of Kim and Diana McDonald and Spale is the daughter of Duane and Jane Spale.
Activities
Rebecca Giddens of Hastings as earned an athletic letter for participation on the Coe College Swimming and Diving team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Giddens, a 2007 Hastings Senior High School graduate is the daughter of Richard and Michelle Giddens.
Tim Hruza of Ord, a University of Nebraska at Kearney student, has been named to the College Student Advisory Committee. The committee, formed by Secretary of State John Gale, involves and educates students regarding voting issues in a nonpartisan manner.
Awards
Jossy Newquist of Aurora, the daughter of Ernest and Kristine Newquist, was named Region IV Leader of the Year of the Hastings College Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society. She is one of four regional leaders being considered by a national committee for the General Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year. She also received the Who's Who award, which is presented to no more than 10 percent of the senior class at Hastings College.
Aaron Rouse of Trumbull, son of Larry and Vicki Rouse, was named winner of the 2008 Bronco Award at Hastings College.
Hastings College students Zach Mayhew of Alda and Grant Bachman of Grand Island won second place in the Event Sportscast category of the 2008 Nebraska Collegiate Media Association awards for work done at KFKX, the college radio station. Jossy Newquist of Aurora won second place in the Collegian newspaper Hard News/Spot News category.
Doane College junior Regan Carlstrom of St. Edward was awarded a Sanderson Prize at the annual student awards ceremeny this past school year. The Sanderson Prize, established in 1934 by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Sewall Sanderson of Lincoln, recognizes individuals who are outstanding in academics and track and field. Carlstrom set or tied five school records this past school year, competing in the 100- and 200-meter dashes outdoors and the 55-, 60- and 200-meter dashes indoors. She also is an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
Scholarships
Whitney Burr of Juniata, a 2008 Hastings College graduate, was named an FTE Congregational Fellow from The Fund for Theological Education and will receive financial assistance to attend Vanderbilt Divinity School.
Faculty honors
Sandy Olson, an information technology instructor at Central Community College-Grand Island, was one of 52 secondary and postsecondary teachers recognized June 10 at the Nebraska Career Education Conference in Kearney. The teachers received the 18th annual BEST (Belong, Excel, Study and Travel) Award from the Nebraska Department of Education. The award is presented to individuals who influenced business and marketing education in Nebraska through their involvement during the past year in professional associations, community and school activities, and other ventures.
