GRAND ISLAND —

Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma
Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, International, met Sept. 13 at the Chapman Baptist Church with 17 members present. President Lois Wegner led the group in the Collect and in singing the Delta Kappa Gamma song. Items of discussion were dues, projects and programs for the upcoming year.
Marian Odabasi and Theda Van Horn reported on the project of providing bags to newborns and their mothers at the hospital in St. Paul. Approximately 45 bags, containing a board book, information on reading, hearing, sight, and development are given to new mothers each year. A motion was passed authorizing Judy Marco to seek funding to expand this project.
Stipends for members for other projects are available. A supply of “Halo Hats” is available for anyone who is need of one because of medical reasons.
The program, “Making Fabric Deco Plates,” was led by Judy Wilson with each member making a plate .Lunch was provided by Dianne Vorderstrasse, Nola Oberhelman, Judy Wilson and Wanda Duennerman.
The next meeting is planned for Oct. 18 at the Palmer Public School library. The program will be “Avoiding Identity Theft.”

Grand Island Day Care Association
The Grand Island Day Care Association met Sept. 8 in the child care lab at Central Community College-Grand Island. The topic was Poison Control where members learned how to keep kids safe from poison. Maria Hines from the Central District Health Department supplied the information on the “pretty poison” and what to do if the kids get in to the poison; andspider bites and what to do if someone is bitten.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in the CCC child care lab.

Nebraska Alpha Delta Kappa

The Nebraska Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority for women educators met in Grand Island at the Central Community College campus Sept. 13. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international organization for outstanding women educators. Alpha Delta Kappa’s mission is to promote educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.
After a social brunch, the group held an executive board meeting with President Judy Rine, Zeta Chapter, Omaha, Nebraska, presiding.
A $500 altruism donation was presented to Suzan Wilson of the I Believe in Me Ranch in Kearney.
Mary Ann Gerdes, President, represented Epsilon Chapter at the executive board meeting. Other members attending from Epsilon were Pat Miller, Tess Westover, Chris Wissing, and Bev Wolf. Epsilon is one of thirty-one Alpha Delta Kappa Chapters in Nebraska.

Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters
Teri Engleman opened the Sept. 16 Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters meeting. Toastmaster Pam Clausen introduced new member, Tam Pauley, and announced that Norma Perkins-Bailey won first place in the area humorous contest and second in evaluations.
Nancy Klimek was grammarian and told a joke; Melinda Haag was timer; Perkins-Bailey gave discern as word of the day, which means to distinguish with the eye or mind, to detect, to understand a distinction.
Engleman’s speech, “Baby Boomers vs. Generation Y,” defined some differences between boomers, born 1949-64, and Gen Y, 1980 to present.
In her ice-breaker speech, “There Was A Plan, After All,” Carolyn Anderson described her career path to her present “dream job.”
In Haag’s speech, “The Feeders,” members learned how to secure bird feeders from determined squirrels and that “bird watching is not just for old people.”
Evaluators were Haag, Klimek and Perkins-Bailey.
Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters meets the first and third Tuesday each month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Center for Independent Living, 3204 W. College. The next meeting is Oct. 7. Trinity LWML
President Ruth McClurkin welcomed members and guests to Trinity LWML on Sept. 12. Hostesses were Betty Rohweder, Lorna Schuster, Vicki Searls and Lyla Stohs.
Roberta Gifford presented the devotion, “Push that button again.” Wyllie Lessig read the mite dedication, “What LWML means.”
Speaker, Alice Bartlett, told of her work with Education First Foundation and her experience as a host for three foreign exchange students, who attended Heartland Lutheran High School where one graduated.
Ruth McClurkin presented the program, Identity Theft, and provided information on being aware of Discount Health Plans with their minimal supplemental coverage and recognizing scams and preventing Senior Fraud.
The Fall Zone Rally will be Oct. 11, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burwell.
LWML Sunday is Oct. 12. Members of the Human Care Committee tied 18 quilts and four baby quilts.
Marline Myers made 30 visits to the hospital, nursing homes and homebound. Marlene Behm played the accordion at various places.
Sept. birthdays were acknowledged. The Sewing Circle met Sept. 25.
Altar Guild will meet Sept. 30. The next meeting, at noon Oct. 10 in the fellowship hall, will celebrate Ruth Society 78th Anniversary Luncheon.
Mission project will be for Heartland Lutheran High School. Carol Quandt will present the program, “Mrs. Martin Luther.”

G.I. Woman’s Club Duplicate 1 Bridge

Grand Island Woman’s Club Duplicate 1 Bridge met Sept. 8. Hostess was Jenny Frankie and the winners were: first place, Jan Karrer and Avella Highland; second place, Reva Berens and Mona Dubas; third place Fran Searson and Betty Torphey.
The group also met Sept. 26 for their next meeting at 1 p.m. at the Woman’s Club, 1109 W. Second St. Sharon Morhain was hostess.

Grand Island Woman’s Club
The Grand Island Woman’s Club met Sept. 9 at the club. The meeting was opened by President Louise Zimmerman. Devotions were given by Virginia White, “The Changing Seasons” - open your eyes, your hearts and minds. Vice President Sally Santin introduced guest speaker, Ina Haney, whose program was on “Surviving Cancer.” Ina told of the importance of having a scheduled check up and of conducting personal checks.
After the program, the group was updated on the Second Street Project and the need to have the club house trim painted. Donations of a gallon of paint or primer for this project would be appreciated. Members were informed of the District V/VI Convention scheduled for Sept. 17, at Anselmo. Pat Mader won the door prize. Hostesses were Kay Sterling and Avella Highland.
The next meeting will at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Grand Island Woman’s Club, 1109 W. Second St. The program will be “Hats, Hats, Hats.” Members are to bring hats and turbans with a story to tell about them. Hat and turbans are also to be brought to donate to the Cancer Treatment Center. For more information, call Gay Crandell at 379-7585.

Truth Rebekah Lodge No. 132
Noble Grand Alice Harris opened the Truth Rebekah Lodge meeting on Sept. 12 at the IOOF Hall, 825 N. White St. Sister Lois Scott served as Outside Guardian. A letter was read from District President Joyce Hodtwalker asking the Lodge to present a skit at the District meeting in April. It was moved that Sister Garnet Rinaker of the Assembly be allowed to use the group’s white alter at the Assembly in October. Sister Alice Harris thanked the Past Noble Grand Club and Brother Fred for the cake and flowers provided at the last meeting. The matter of removing the telephone was tabled until next year. Sister Jean West received a gift from Sister Alice for her attendance performance and serving as Warden. The Birthday Song was sung to Sister Lucille Armstrong. Sister Gerene gave a report on her trip to Winnipeg, Canada, for the Sovereign Grand Lodge; she also thanked Sister Virginia Fosket for serving as Secretary in her absence. Sister Alice thanked the Yorks for serving lunch and announced that formals will be worn starting Sept. 26. The lunch committee for that date will be the Stubbendicks.

Alpha Sigma Chapter Epsilon Sigma International

The August meeting of Alpha Sigma Chapter ESA International was called to order by President Kostbahn with 17 members present.
Members were encouraged to attend the Sept. 20 Fall Council meeting in Kearney. A synopis on projects undertaken and new projects planned include: 1.) display of a Christmas tree at Stuhr Museum by Alpha Sigma this year, 2.) a thank you was received from Mid-Nebraska Speedway for helping with the food tent, 3.) helping with the sale of Younkers Community Days coupon books, 4.) a Salad and Silver Salad supper was discussed, 5.) educationals included a trip to a winery on Sept. 21 and a library tour in the future, 6.) thanks went to members who helped with the Cadillac Golf Tournament in May at Hasting, 7.) the ALS and Diabetes Walk was discussed.
A report was given on the Holiday Tour of Homes scheduled for Dec. 6. Tickets may be purchased from members starting Nov. 1.

Alpha Delta Kappa
The Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met Sept. 17 at Howard School with the theme “Precious Gems: Our Epsilon Sisters.”
President-elect Tess Westover distributed program books for the biennium, with the theme of “Sharing the Gems of Education, Giving, Mentoring and Sisterhood.” The serving committee, chaired by Nannette Neuhaus, planned a get-acquainted ice cream social. President Mary Ann Gerdes reported on the North Central Regional Conference in Springfield, Mo., that she, Westover and Past President Chris Wissing attended this summer.
Katie Nabower, who attends the University of Nebraska at Kearney, is the recipient of the Sophomore Scholarship. The altruism projects were Stuff the Bus and Adult Basic Education. Cyndee Mann handed out Younkers fundraising coupons.

GI Woman's Club Duplicate 1 Bridge

Preceptor Alpha Xi
The fall session began with a brunch at the Kirschke Bed and Breakfast house on Aug. 12. Yearbooks were given out and plans for the upcoming meetings and socials were discussed.
The first regular meeting was Sept. 8 at the home of Mary Ann Gerdes with Bonnie Skeen presiding.
Thank you letters were read from the "Make a Wish Foundation" and the Ronald McDonald House for the group’s donations.
Mary Ann Gerdes presented a program with a narrative and a video on Colonial Williamsburg where she had visited.
On Oct. 4, members travelled to Barbara Clark’s resort home in the Colorado Rockies.
Barbara conducted the meeting and gave members a scenic tour among the Aspens.  Janice Mosher was a guest and she won the hostess gift. Barbara presented the program, "Pioneer Cookery," and recipes from the Autocrat Kitchen.
Members attended the area church as a group.
The next meeting will be on Oct. 13 at the home of Marjorie Klein.

Toastmasters at Principal

The following is a summary of the Sept. 3 and 10 meetings conducted by Toastmasters at Principal: toastmasters were Georg Hood - Teddy Bears and Brenda Kucera - State Fair and speakers included Anita Lewandowski - Simply the Best; Deb Jackson - Ice Breaker; Jeri Jaixen - That’s a Fact, Jack! and  Brenda Kucera - Addressing the Opposition. Table topic winners were Kendra Beckstead and Linda Wilson and words introduced were gubernatorial and perorate.
The following is a summary of the meetings conducted Sept. 17 and 24: toastmasters were Cheryl Jones - A light Unto the World and Karla Schwieger-Arnold - School Daze. Speakers were Jill Purvis - From Friendly to Fearful;  Paul Hoos - Fun Food-Fresh Produce and Brook Sautter - Why I Am Who I Am and table topic winner was Stacy Hoppes. Words introduced were surly and quandary.
The District Fall Conference is scheduled for Oct. 17 and 18 at the Interstate Holiday Inn in  Grand Island. Darren LaCroix, World Champion Public Speaker, will be in attendance.
Toastmasters at Principal meet from noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday at 3025 W. College. Guests are welcome! For more information, contact Karla Schwieger-Arnold at 385-7233.

South Central Nebraska Czech Society
The South Central Nebraska Czech Society met Sept. 14 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Home in Hastings; 24 members and four guests were present. Mary Ellen Gurney and Toni Turner were hostesses.
President Donna Gruntorad called the meeting to order.
Thank-yous were read from 1.) the flood relief donation sent to the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and 2.) Emily Chloupek, 2008 Queen, who is attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Copies of Czech sources at the Nebraska State Historical Society were made available for those doing Czech heritage research.
Julie Cerny brought the book of poetry, "Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps" by Ted Kooser, 13th National Poet Laureate.
Two items were donated to the  Chapter Library: 1.)   1888 Czech prayer book donated by Dick Jensen 2.) video of the 2004 Czech Concert at Doane College-Crete donated by Toni Turner.
Birthdays acknowledged were Clayton Jares, Margaret Karnatz, Ed Pavelka and Mary Ann Gurney's 94th birthday. Anniversaries were Lori and Willie Skala and the 50th anniversary of Margaret and Lovell Karnatz.
The next meeting was scheduled for Oct. 12.

AARP No. 635  
The AARP Hall County Chapter No. 635 met Sept. 16 for a potluck dinner at the Grand Generation Center with 26 members present. New members, Daryll and Shirley Thavenet, were introduced.
The 50th Anniversary of AARP was celebrated. Mayor Margaret Hornady signed an AARP 50th Anniversary Celebration Proclamation but was not able to attend. Quotes from the 1950's were read and brought back memories of yesteryear. Delores Meyers read a drug story from the 50's. Carnations were presented to long-time members, Carrol Eveland, Art and June Senseney, DeLysle and Delores Meyers and Cheri Nikkila. Gifts of AARP hats, padfolios and AARP shirts were given out. Cake and ice cream were served.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Grand Generation Center for a potluck dinner.

Grand Island Area Retired School Personnel

The Grand Island Area Retired School Personnel met Sept. 24 at Riverside Lodge for a potluck supper. President Gwynne Kuhn welcomed 33 members and guests. New members, Guy and Sharon Roggenkamp, were introduced.
The hostess committee, chaired by Joyce Lind, provided drinks and desserts.
The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Woodland Room of Riverside Lodge. Grand Island Public Schools Outreach Coordinator, Verna Haberman, will present the program.
Members are encouraged to bring items to the meeting for the Food Pantry.
