Blessed Sacrament Knights of Columbus
The Blessed Sacrament Knights of Columbus held their monthly meeting July 22 at the Knights of Columbus room at the parish center. Acting Grand Knight, Kurt Frohling, called the meeting to order and started the meeting with a prayer. Recorder, Tom LaBrie, read the minutes from the previous meeting which were approved as read. Money was donated to the Association for Retarded Citizens, Special Olympics and Strong Americans from the Tootsie Roll Drive. The Knights assisted with Habitat for Humanity work in June; it was well attended by the council.
Treasurer, Tom Ernestmeyer, gave a report on council finances. A thank you was read on behalf of Fr. Frank Curran for the work done in regards to the celebration of the newly remodeled church and his retirement party. The Grand Island Central Catholic students sent a thank you for the Post Prom donation. Field Agent, Bill Buchta, reported on the Knights fraternal benefit of insuring uninsurable children under the age of 18. District Deputy, Dusty Hast, reported that a major induction ceremony will be held in October in Grand Island. The meeting was closed with a prayer lead by Kurt Frohling.
Aurora Knights of Columbus
The Aurora Knights of Columbus annual awards banquet was on July 15 at the Parish Center. Fr. Dennis Hunt presented invocation and grace. Larry Ramaekers was Master of Ceremonies. Guests were Dusty and Diana Hast, District Deputy, and Bill and Nancy Buchta, insurance representative. Nitta's in Aurora catered the meal. Grand Island Central Catholic music teacher, Priscilla Balasa, sang songs for entertainment. Al Wishart, Grand Knight, presented scholarships to Robin Johnson, Eric Ratzlaff and Jordan Bart, each received a $600 scholarship. Certificates of Merit were presented to Bernie Kramer and Chuck Jansen for their numerous years of involvement in the church and assistance as ushers. Family of the Year award was presented to Matt and Rachel George. Andrew Ostdiek was awarded as Knight of the Year. Officers for the 2008-2009 fraternal year are Grand Knight, Al Wishart; Deputy Grand Knight, Keith Wasem; Chancellor, Bill Krejci; Recorder, Andrew Ostdiek; Treasurer, Mike McQuiston; Financial Secretary, Greg Bonifas; Advocate, Jeromy McCoy; Warden, Tom Wanek, Sr.; Inside Guard, Al Cudly; Outside Guard, Phil Hupf; Chaplain, Fr. Dennis Hunt; One-year Trustee, Preston McDaniels; Two-year trustee, Larry Ramaekers and Three-year Trustee, Dr. Tim Widhalm. The next meeting will be a steak feed for prospective new members on Aug. 18 at the Schneider-George cabin along with the installation of officers.
National Active Retired Federal Employees
The National Active Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) met Aug. 4 at the United Veterans Club. Thirty-two members present. President Robert Golka presided. Frances Eschliman gave the Invocation.
A free meal went to William Taylor of Kearney and door prizes went to Cherie Tracy and Gary Martin, both were returned to Alzheimer's.
Bob Kutz, Membership, is still sending letters to people who have dropped their membership. Kutz is still selling football chances tickets for $10, the drawing will be next month.
Roger Andrews, Legislative, reminded members to read the newsletter notes and watch what is happening to the retirement benefits. FERS retirees are getting their sick leave credited to retirement and is attached to a Tobacco Bill HR1108.
Millie Terjak, Calling Chairman, will be working with President Golka on how to get calls made to members of the former Kearney chapter.
The Jay Stoddard, Nebraska Third District Representative candidate, provided the program. Stoddard stated that with the large amount of debt the nation has at this time, there is a need for the money to be managed better in Congress.
Ardyce Earl, Program Chairman, said that Michael Gloor who is running for the 35th District will be speaker for the next meeting.
Danish Sisterhood Lodge No. 113
Danish Sisterhood Lodge No. 113 met at Golden Towers Aug. 2 with nine member in attendance. Hostess Lois Baasch served lunch with birthday cake for dessert. All members celebrated their birthdays with an exchange of cards.
President Donna Andersen conducted an informal meeting. Plans to work on the scrapbook were discussed as the Lodge will celebrate 100 years next February. The program consisted of members bringing a "place setting" and telling the history of the dishes.
A get well card was signed for Secretary Sylvia McTavish who is undergoing tests at Mayo.
The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 2 at Golden Towers. Hostesses will be Delores Stueven and Donna Andersen. Guests are welcome.
YWCA Cards Cards
On July 30, 40 "Y" members and guests met for a covered dish luncheon.
High scores were: Pitch: tied for first, Evelyn Zigler and Shirley McVicker, third, Dorothy Moore, and tied for fourth, Mary Muirhead and Donna Moss. Bridge: Pauline McCleery, Mary Olson, Della Klingman, Ada Smeaton and Fran Koehler. Double Pinochle: Maxine Torgerson and Glenrose Luebee.
YWCA members may pay $4 or bring a covered dish. Nonmembers pay $5.50. The next luncheon/card party will be at noon on Aug. 27.
Toastmasters at Principal
Kathy Kuszak is congratulated for being the clubs most enthusiastic Toastmaster during 2007/2008.

Contests for the fall are the Humorous and Evaluation Club Contests which will be completed by Aug. 25; area contests will be completed by Sept. 17 and division contests will be completed by Sept. 27.

Trinity LWML
President Ruth McClurkin welcomed members to Trinity LWML on Aug. 8 in the fellowship hall, at Trinity Lutheran Church, followed by prayer. Hostesses were Betty Schuessler, Deanna Reeh, Vicki Schmahl and Sue Scholz.
The devotion, ``Trust in God, he will direct our way,`` was given by Deanna Reeh. The LWML topic, ``Let it not be so among us,`` was led by Pastor Rinehart. The mite dedication was read by Coralee Howell.
Members of the Human Care Committee tied 12 quilts and four baby quilts. Forty-eight visits to nursing homes and assisted living were reported. Marlene Behm played the accordion at the Veterans Home, Skilled Care and Nursing Homes in St. Paul, Central City and Aurora.
A reminder: the registration form and fee is due by Sept. 1 for the Nebraska District South LWML Convention in Hastings.
August birthdays were acknowledged. The Altar Guild will meet Aug. 26 and the Sewing Circle on Aug. 28.
The next meeting is set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12, in the fellowship hall. The program will be regarding identity theft. The mission project will be monetary gifts, to the Food Panty for married students, at Concordia University, in Seward.

The Grand Island Sketch Club planning committee met July 24 to prepare the 2008/2009 calendar.

Sept. 11 through 20 - Autumn Art Workshop at the State 4-H Camp at Halsey. Louise Milby is the contact person.
Oct. 13 - Oil/pastel workshop with Patty Scarborough from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 4-H Cafe at Fonner Park.
Nov. 10 - Collage workshop with Donna Alber from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.at the First Christian Church.
Dec. 8 - Christmas luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church. There will also be a business meeting and painting exchange.
The 2009 calendar will be presented at the meeting in December.

St. Mary's Knights of Columbus
The St. Mary's Knights of Columbus held their monthly meeting July 21 in the parish hall. Grand Knight, Mark Galvan, called the meeting to order and started the meeting with a prayer. Recorder, Matt Ripp, read the minutes from the previous meeting which were approved as read. Mark Galvan congratulated Matt Ripp on being the next Grand Knight and thanked the council for their support throughout his two years as leader.
A thank you was read from the Special Olympics for the recent donation and a thank you from the two new deacons for the council's assistance in the May ceremony.
Treasurer, Steve Douglas, gave an annual report for the council. Chuck Donner, financial secretary, read the council bills which were approved as read. Summer attendance for Bingo on Sunday nights has been improving steadily. The council is considering a hamburger night for a fundraiser in the fall. The meeting was closed with a prayer lead by new Grand Knight, Matt Ripp.
Hall County VFWA 1347
The women's auxiliary met Aug. 4 for a potuck supper and meeting at the United Veterans Club. Guest, Lori Skala, spoke about the Accordian Jamboree scheduled for Aug. 30 and 31. The auxiliary sponsered six Veterans to attend the concert.
The auxiliary accepted two members. Members are reminded to be prompt with their remittance for dues as the goal is to be 100 percent by Dec.1.
LaVonne Catron and Pearl Brokofsky hosted coffee hour at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Aug. 9. The District 11 picnic was Aug. 16.
The Auxiliary donated funds to the Staff for Santa Car and Bike Show to be held in September. This program helps to see that all residents at the Nebraska Veterans Home receive a Christmas present. The ladies also painted fingenails and played Bingo at the NVH on Aug. 11. Those wanting to volunteer can give the Auxiliary a call.
The Department of Nebraska VFW & VFWA had a School of Instruction on Aug. 2. Lavonne Catron and Karen Linden attended and gave a report at the auxuliary meeting.
The next meeting is 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at the UVC. The change of day is due to Labor Day Hoilday.
G.I. Woman's Club Duplicate 1 Bridge
Grand Island Woman's Club Duplicate 1 Bridge met July 7 at the Club House with Anita Parker as hostess.
Winners were: first place, Marcia Baxter and Ann Jones; second place, Loucille Riessland and Caroline Haller; and third place Betty Rother and Kathy Sass.
Marcia Baxter was hostess for the next meeting scheduled for Aug. 11 at the Club House.

The Platt Duetsch Colonial Double Pinochle Club met for lunch Aug. 6 with 21 in attendance. Donna Fredrick, Darleen Walker, Irene Pelican, Betty McMullen and Glenrose Luebbe are celebrating birthdays this month. Sandra Hostler has a wedding anniversary.
Door prizes were won by Dorothy Dahms, Donna Speece, Irene Alder, Shirley Spencer, Glenrose Luebbe, Betty McMullen, Jean Stalnaker and Darleen Walker.

AARP No. 635
The AARP Hall County Chapter No. 635 met July 15 at the Grand Generation Center with a potluck dinner. Twenty-six members and one guest were present.
Clarance and Eunice Becker were presented the AARP Community Service Award and a commemorative pin for 2008 in appreciation of their outstanding service to the Association and to the community. Clarance was President and Eunice was Secretary of the local chapter for two years. Both have been active in AARP and many other organizations.
The entertainment for the evening was Marlene Behm, an accomplished accordion player who played polkas, waltzes, old-time and sacred music requested by the AARP members. Her music brought back memories of years past.
South Central Nebraska Czech Society
The South Central Nebraska Czech Society met July 13 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Home in Hastings. Naomi Harnagel and Pat Prochaska were hostesses.
Over 300 attended the festival held June 7 at the VFW.
President Donna Gruntorad reported on the Czech-Slovak pageant at Clarkson, June 28. South Central Queen, Emily Chloupek, participated in the pageant and parade. Carolyn Rose Brown, representing the Omaha Czech Cultural Club, was crowned the 2008-2009 Nebraska State Queen. Secretary Janice Hoffmeister and Julie Cerny presented a hoska baking demonstration at the Opera House.
With the flood devastation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, part of the Arlene Hromadka and Gail Gurney memorial money for Flood Relief was sent to the National Czech/Slovak Museum and Library. Memorial money was also sent to the Czech Language Foundation at UNL.
Gruntorad provided a copy of the first issue of the paper, ``The Czech Slavnost,`` to be published six times a year at Wilber.
Willie Skala provided information about the Accordion Jamboree scheduled for Aug. 30 and 31 at the Heartland Event Center in Grand Island. It's theme is ``Saluting Veterans.``
The next meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the VFW.
Platt Duetsche Ladies Society
Barbara Ruff and Elaine Caraways were initiated as new members at the August meeting of the Platt Duetsche Ladies Society. Guests were Jeanette Hawthorne, guest of Harriett Meyer and Marilyn Webster, and Mary Gloe, guest of Martha Buettner. All three ladies were proposed for membership.
Honorary birthdays for the month of August were recognized. Door prizes were won by Marge Johnson, Martha Buettner, Doris Obermiller, Vera Jacobsen, Alice Spiehs, Myrna Petzoldt, Glenrose Luebbe, Delores Meyer, and Jo Sanders. Carolyn Luebbe won the special fish bowl drawing.
Sheepshead winners were Bernice Baasch, Jackie Pollock, Lois Obermeier, Edna Boltz, and Arlene Rembolt. LaJean Kroeger and Shirley Boltz also won.
Pitch winners were Marcia Baxter, Rogene Toben, Della Klingman, Gerrie Johnson, Arlene Demaranville, Marilyn Webster, Donna Moss, Delavon Harrold, Jackie Bungee, Lorraine Stoltenberg and Gloria Tagge.
Double pinochle winners were Margaret Meyer, Maxine Torgerson, and Dorothy Frerichs. Pinochle winners were Vera Jacobsen, Wilda Paustian and Eleanora Miller.
The next meeting will be Sept. 5. Cards are scheduled to be played on the odd Fridays of Aug. 15 and 29.
Trinity United Methodist Women
Trinity United Methodist Women met Aug. 7 in the church parlor. Brunch was served by members of the Love Circle.
The program, ``Proposed Plans for Renovation of Church,`` was presented by Niels McDermott, Chairman, Building Committee, assisted by Andy Cochran and Ray Van Boskirk.
The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4 in the church parlor. The program, ``Public Education for the Love of Children,`` will be presented by Dr. Steve Joel, Superintendent, Grand Island Public Schools.
Shalom Society
"Shalom Society (LWML) of Peace Lutheran Church prepared for it annual fundraising project by making and packaging noodles which will be sold on Oct. 5, 2008, LWML Sunday," reported Char Reiners, Chairwoman.
The September meeting will be replaced with the LWML Nebraska District South Convention scheduled for Sept. 26 and 27 at the Fairgrounds in Hastings. Serving as delegates are Carol Kirchner and Joyce Krueger; serving as alternates are Lucille Fuss and Jean Spiehs. Marlene Peters will serve as co-chairman of the human care collection which will accept hygiene/disaster relief kits, underwear and tube socks (must be new items in their original wrappers), bedding, film canisters of quarters, stuffed toys (clean and safe), plastic soup bowls and aluminum soup spoons for refugees gathering for meals.
Diane Johannes of Central City is serving as chairwoman of the Hospitality Committee for the Grand Island Zone; she is soliciting 40 volunteers to assist.
Shalom's next group meetings will be at 1:30 and 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6. The evening meeting will be hosted by Esther Circle chaired by Joanie Hoos and Marcella Greenwood.
Qwest TelecomPioneers
The Qwest TelecomPioneers, Central Nebraska Council, met at the United Veterans Club Aug. 12. Deb Ahrens presided with 18 members present.
Deb read the new check and cash handling policy.
For training purposes, Denver needs to know new officers by the end of September, candidates are still needed.
Waffleman volunteers were thanked. Thank you cards were sent to Platt-Deutsche, Skagway and the Special Olympic volunteers. Donations to the Merrick County Food Pantry, St. Paul Vets Museum, Fullerton Track and the quarterly Lifeline payment were approved.
The picnic is 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Stolley Park. Guests are asked to bring table service and a covered dish; drinks and chicken will be provided. RSVP to Koann or Deb by Sept. 4.
The Junk Jaunt is Sept. 26 through 28 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Sale items are still needed; food items were suggested. Volunteer workers are needed, call Deb or Norma, also, to pick up donations if needed.
Suzie gave updates for the soup supper on Oct. 14.
Ruth and Ruby volunteered to serve at the Vets Hospital on Aug. 31.
The next regular meeting will be Nov. 11, due to picnic and soup supper.
Union Pacific Employees Club No.16
Union Pacific Employees Club No.16 met Aug. 16 at the Grand Generation Center for the club's annual ice cream social dinner and meeting.
President Wayne Huebner called the meeting to order; 21 were present.
Guests present were Mac and Wanda McMillan and Don and Ruth Tucker from the Omaha chapter.
Installation of officers include Wayne Huebner-President; Jack Lee-Vice President; D.B. and Jean Wagner-Secretary/Treasurer and Board Members: Jim Christensen, Mary Magnusson, added to the board with Jean Wagner, Sharon Morhain, Marlene Lee and Emma Huebner.
President Huebner gave a report on the convention in Huston where 55 club delegates were in attendance. Eileen Galliher was elected the new chairperson of the General Committee. The auction at the convention generated $8,700 which was devided between several charties.
Emma Huebner and Ruth Chism were the recipients of the free July and August birthday meals.
Raffle winner was Bill Magnusson.
The ice cream social dinner serving committee included Wayne and Emma Huebner, Jim and Alta Christensen, Wilbur and Erma Church and Loucille Riessland.
Following the meeting, regular bingo was played.
The next meeting will be the club's annual chicken dinner, Sept. 20, at the Grand Generation Center, with Dix and Jean Wagner as chairpersons.
AARP No. 635
The AARP Hall County Chapter No. 635 met Aug. 19 at the Grand Generation Center with a potluck dinner; 27 members and eight guests were present.
Rhonda Veleba, development coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters, gave an informative report on the organization. Community-based mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship, where Bigs and Littles get together on their own to share fun activites they both enjoy. Matches typically meet for one hour a week. This program is open to adults or couples at least 18 years of age. BBBS of Grand Island serve Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick counties. AARP members voted to make a donation to the organization.
AARP was founded in 1958 by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus with a dedication to making life better for people as they age. In 2008, AARP celebrates its 50th Anniversary with the theme of "Generations Connecting for Change." Grand Island Area Chapter #635 was established May 1, 1970.
AARP's 50th anniversary will be celebrated by Chapter No. 635 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Grand Generation Center with a potluck dinner. Cake will be provided.

Central Nebraska Writers Network
The Central Nebraska Writers Network met Aug. 7 with member and guest introductions and current writing themes. The assignment is to consider topics for a poem, then create groups of rhyming words for use in the "Fun with Words" program presented by Jeanne Schutte. A list of difficult to rhyme words for brainstorming may be included.
The Central Nebraska Writers Network will next meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Grand Island Public Library. The library will again be on the winter schedule. The room assignment will be announced on an easel in the foyer.

Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters
Sergeant of Arms Teri Engleman opened the Aug. 5 Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters meeting with the pledge of allegiance.
President Melinda Haap presided at a brief business meeting and served as toastmaster. Nancy Klimek presented a joke and was general evaluator. Engleman was timer.
In his icebreaker speech, "John's Hobbies," John Lily introduced himself by telling about his love of hunting, camping and model railroad collecting. Klimek provided evaluations.
Norma Perkins-Bailey practiced her contest speech, "Dinner and A Dance," describing an unusual dancing experience. Haag was her evaluator.
Table Topic Master Engleman led an impromptu speaking exercise about state and county fairs. Participants were Klimek, Perkins-Bailey and Haag.

Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters met Aug. 19 for the fall club contest in Humorous speaking and speech evaluation.
President Melinda Haag led the pledge of allegiance and served as Contest Chair. Carolyn Anderson and John Lily were timers.
Norma Perkins-Bailey presented her contest speech, "Dinner and A Dance." Nancy Klimek provided an oral evaluation.
On Saturday, Sept. 6 Perkins-Bailey and Klimek will compete in the humorous and evaluation Area Contests, respectfully, at Cathedral Square, Cedar and Elm streets.
Winners go on to compete in the Division contests at Columbus on Sep. 20.
Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters meets the first and third Tuesday each month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Center for Independent Living, 3204 W. College. The next meeting is Sept. 2. Truth Rebekah Lodge No.132 met Aug. 8 at the Lodge Home with 16 members present. A thank you card was read from Donna and Winston Morse on the death of her brother.
A letter from Cornhusker announced that the upcoming Grand Lodge and Rebekah Assembly will be held Oct. 12 through 17 at Riverside Lodge. Sister Gerene Williams was elected District Deputy President and Delegates to the Assembly were Sister Alice Harris and alternate Sister Donna Morse.
Sister Joyce Hodtwalker, district president, called a committee meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the I.O.O.F. Hall. Virginia Fosket was asked to serve as secretary for the next meeting as Sister Gerene will be in Canada for a meeting.
Sister Lela read an article from the Cornhusker. Lunch committee was Maxine Failing and Lucille Armstrong. Bingo followed lunch.
The next meeting is a no hostess covered dish, with chicken being furnished by the Lodge at 6 p.m. Bring a covered dish and your own table service.
Chrysalis Life Line for Good Times
Chrysalis Life Line for Good Times, a registered chapter of the Red Hat Society held their "get together," in full regalia, July 17 with Evelyn Heater as hostess.
Additional activities for the Red Hatters included:
July 17 - military program performance for the St. Francis Skilled Care patients
July 18 - military program at Lebensraum Retirement Home complimented the resident's birthday party.
Aug. 1 - performance at the Midtown Holiday Inn for the 80 to 90 representatives/guests of Archer Petroleum Co. Red Hatters ranging in age from 73 to 92 entertained and received standing ovations through out their program which included an introduction of the group by Bette Brown; Betty Kelly performed a Tiny Tim number, "Tiptoeing Through the Tulips”; Vi Farris played selections on her harmonica; Opal Levene danced to "Rock and Roll Waltz”; the Red Hatters' Mascot was presented, as well as a poem by Donna Ullman; Christina Powell and Evelyn Heater line danced to "I Wish I Were a Teddy Bear”; the grand finale of "God Bless America" ended the program.
Aug. 14 - performance at Wedgewood Care Center.
Aug. 21- "get together" with Marise Hopkins as hostess.
Aug. 22 - performance at Lebensraum Retirement Home.
On Aug. 27, the group will perform at Park Place Nursing Home.

Truth Rebekah Circle
Truth Rebekah Circle No.132 met Aug. 6 at the Odd Fellows Hall, with President Alice Harris presiding.
Members with August birthdays were recognized.
Jean West gave the program with several readings taken from "Chicken Soup for the Golden Soul" by Erma Bombeck.
In keeping with the opening of the school year, members were asked to bring their school picture and share a favorite school memory.
The next meeting will be as 1:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Odd Fellows Hall. Lucille Armstrong will be serving.
