GRAND ISLAND —

Hall County VFWA 1347 

The ladies auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars met at Tommy's Restaurant for a luncheon and short meeting. Members  spent the afternoon playing Po-Ke-No. A report on the Department Convention was given by Jane Nelson and Karen Linden. The auxiliary won First Place in the newsletter and Karen was Outstanding Auxiliary President in her division. Lois Scott was honored at the Gold Star/Membership luncheon.  A moment of silence was observed for departed sister Lee Hesselgesser. Draping of the Charter for Lee will be held at the August meeting.          The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at the United Veterans Club. A pot luck supper will precede the meeting at 6 p.m.

Grand Island Women's Club


The Grand Island Women's Club met at the club house, 1109 W. Second St., on July 8 for a salad luncheon and cards.

Devotions were given by Peg Vansant. President Louise Zimmerman led members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect. President Zimmerman reported on dues, the District meeting on July 17 and also mentioned that the Library is looking for volunteers to read to the children during the summer. For those interested, forms are available at the library. Everyone wished Irene Feaster a happy birthday. Board members who prepared the salad luncheon are thanked.

 President Zimmerman introduced guest speakers, Ashley Mohler and Janea Ramsey and their mothers. These girls were sponsored by the Women's Club to attended the Sophomore Pilgrimage in Lincoln. They spoke about their tour of the Capitol, visiting the Governor's  Mansion and what they had learned about helping, volunteering and the importance of knowing how they can become more involved. The girls thanked Marcia Truell for driving them to Lincoln and the Women's club for the trip. After the meeting was adjourned, cards were played.

 The next meeting will be  Sept. 9. There will be no salad luncheon in August.

Liederkranz Ladies Society

The Liederkranz Ladies Society met for luncheon and cards July 9 at the Club. Hostesses were Maxine Bielfeldt, Marcia Baxter and Doris Djernes. Door prize winners were Joan Head, Vena Pace, Irene Feaster, Helen Anderson and Avella Highland.

Card prize winners were: Pinochle: Virginia Klein and Sandy Yarns; Bridge: Julia Royer, Marcia Baxter, Loucille Riessland, Kathy Sass and Joan Head; Pitch: Doris Djernes and Eleanor Ruge.

The next meeting will be Aug. 13 at the Liederkranz Club with cards being played following lunch.

Toastmasters at Principal


Toastmasters in June were: Kelly Ehlers-Hunter -  "Adventures in Iowa”; Jill Purvis- "Father's Day”; Stacy Hoppes - "Flag Day”; and Carrie Galvan-”Tornadoes."

Speakers in June were: Anita Lewandowski Brown – "The Gift”; Kathy Kuszak – "Beginning Your Speech”; Brenda Kucera – "Cold Call”; Josh Hood – "The Greatest Regiment You've Never Heard About”; Josh Hood – "Predicting the Future”; Jeri Jaixen – "My Life in Pictures”; and Karla Schwieger-Arnold – "What I Didn't Know." 

Officer Training and Spring TLI was conducted July 12.

The District Fall Conference is scheduled for October 17 and 18 at the Interstate Holiday Inn in Grand Island.

Toastmasters at Principal meet from noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday at 3025 W. College. Guests are welcome. Contact Karla Schwieger-Arnold at 385-7233.

Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters

President Melinda Haag opened the July 15 Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters meeting with the pledge of allegiance and introduced guests Carolyn Andersen and Gwen Bergstrom.

Pam Clausen was toastmaster, Haag gave a joke, served as grammarian and general evaluator and presented condine as word of the day which means suitable to the fault or situation; Anderson was timer.  

Norma Perkins-Bailey gave a speech, "The Best Is Yet To Come." She emphasized that fun and member recognition is as valuable within a toastmaster club as gaining communication and leadership skills. Cheryl Rugebregt was her evaluator.

Table Topic Master Rugebregt led an impromptu speaking exercise around the theme, goals. Participants were Clausen, Haag and Andersen.

Yakkity Yakkers will hold their club contest in humorous speaking and evaluations on Tue., Aug. 19. Those who will compete should inform Pam Clausen. For more information on training events, contests and conferences, log onto www.district24toastmasters.com/calendar.cfm.

Andrew Chapter No. 41

Andrew Chapter No. 41, Order of the Eastern Star met July 7 at the Masonic Center in Chapman. The meeting was opened by Carol Ann Campbell, Worthy Matron, and greeted by Bill Parrish, Worthy Patron.

The meeting was dedicated to all veterans; Campbell read a poem on "Freedom is not free."

The last meeting's minutes, correspondence and  treasure's report were read by Harriet Parrish, Secretary. 

The yearly District Grand Chapter visitation was conducted July 11 at Trinity Methodist Church; Afternooners catered. 

A thank-you note was read from Betty Garwood, Past Grand Matron, and Dave Thienel, Past Grand Patron, for the chapter's contributions, which helped with the success of their project, four  Golden Sower books will be placed in each public library in Nebraska.

Renovation of the new Grand Island Masonic Temple building should be completed in late fall.

The annual officer's birthday party will be Aug. 27 at organist Diane Smutny's house. 

Claudia Morgan, Associate Matron, has invited all chapter members to her home on Aug. 24 for the annual North Loup Popcorn Days Parade. A potluck luncheon will be at noon also the chapter will have a float in the parade. 

Janet Donahue and Dorothy Moss of Chapman chapter presented Andrew Chapter a monetary gift for special projects.

Mary Ann Gerdes and Jean West prepared refreshments. Nineteen officers attended.

Grand Island DOES Drove No. 147

The card and salad luncheon on July 17 of the Grand Island DOES Drove No. 147 was attended by 70 ladies.

Pitch winners were Fern Nielsen, Milrae Sullivan, Norma Jacob, Ada Smeaton, Helen Smith, Lucille Janulewicz, Delores Meyers, Betty Schweiger and Cheryl Madison.

Bridge winners were Eleen Stuart and Fran Koehler.

Pinochle winners were Edith Calliham and Helen Anderson.

Levada Nielson, chairman, and her committee of Annabel Housts, Mary Anna Kasper, Mila Gappa DeKok, Rose Powers and Linda Nielson are thanked for preparing the salads. Betty Schmidt and Phyllis Johnson were in charge of the card games.

Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society

The Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society met July 11 for their luncheon, meeting and cards. A moment of silence was observed for departed members Margaret Johnson, Margaret Doud and Leola Hesselgesser.

Guests were introduced as Courtney Klein, guest of Louise Hennings, Barbara Ruff, guest of Rosella Noden, Marty Van Husen, guest of Doris Henke, and Elaine Caraway, guest of Lola Cosgriff. The last three were also proposed for membership.                                                           

Happy Birthday was sung to Dora Wiese, who was celebrating her 96th birthday that day, and also sung to Alice Olson, who is celebrating her 93rd birthday this month. Door prizes were won by Audrey Hongersmeier, Wilda Paustian, Gerri Johnson, Darlene Schultz, Ruby Charron, Peg Bellairs, Agnes Lempke, Glenrose Luebbe, Lorraine Krecklow and Rita Kubicek. Lola Cosgriff won the fish bowl drawing.

Pitch winners were Doris Djernes, Tootie Husen, Elsie Roemmich, Lorraine Liebhart, Myrtle Raile and Alice Spiehs.

Sheepshead winners were Norma Jacob, Norma Harders, Helen Koch, Betty Rother, Glova Osborne, Karen Woitaszewski,LaJean Kroeger and Marlene Mader.                                               

Pinochle winners were Doris Obermiller, Imogene Williams, and Wilda Paustian. Double pinochle winners were Maxine Torgerson, Bev Wolfe, and Darleen Walker.                   

The next regular meeting and luncheon will be at noon Aug. 1. Off Friday cards will be played July 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Central Nebraska Writers Network

The Central Nebraska Writers Network met July 3. Mary Vonseggern presented the basic steps in "How to do Genealogy," they were: Family Group Charts for information on each person, Pedigree Charts showing the direct lines ascending back in time and a 15 Generation Pedigree Chart. For migration purposes, she used a U.S. Map, a State Map and the Country of Origin Map and gave the appropriate technique for each map. Mary gave insights into our surnames; they either were a reflection of a place, a profession or a physical attribute. The value of a genealogy was reflected in the history of family health issues. The assignment this month is to bring the first paragraph of your favorite novel.

The next meeting will be at 6:15 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Grand Island Public Library. Due to the shortened summer hours, the meeting will begin at the earlier time. The room assignment will be announced on an easel in the foyer.

Truth Rebekah Lodge No. 132

Eighteen members were in attendance at the July 11 meeting of Truth Rebekah Lodge. Vice Grand Alice Harris opened the meeting with the Flag Salute and singing of America the Beautiful. Roll call was taken noting the Noble Grand Eunice Becker being excused because of illness.

The minutes and bills were read and approved. It was moved and carried that the Secretary discontinue the telephone. She will get a list of cell phone numbers of the members who wish to participate. Sister Joyce Hodtwalker made a report on the District  Meeting plans.

Birthdays observed for July were Berniece Dixon and Fred and Wilma Stubbendick. Hostesses for the evening were Vena Pace and Berniece Dixon.

A meeting was conducted July 25. Finger food and Bingo followed the meeting.

Shalom Society  (LWML)

Shalom Society  (LWML) of Peace Lutheran Church held it's annual Mini-Retreat the evening of July 7. Devotion was narrated by Carol Kirchner entitled “Towels”, with the reminder this is what Jesus used to dry his disciples feet before he died. Bible Bingo was played with attendees receiving prizes. The Executive Board treated attendees to ice cream sundaes.  

August noodle making will take the place of the August meeting. Members and guests are welcome to assist on the following dates:  Aug. 6, 7, 12 and 13. Char Reiners will chair the event.

LWML NE District South Convention will be held on Sept. 26 and 27 at the Hastings Fairgrounds. Serving as Shalom's delegates are Carol Kirchner and Joyce Krueger; alternates are Lucille Fuss and Jean Spiehs. The Hospitality Committee is being chaired by Diane Johannes of Central City and 40 volunteers are needed from the Grand Island Zone. These volunteer names are to be turned in to her at Johannes@cablene.com as soon as possible. Ingathering items are also being collected. 

 

Trinity LWML

President Ruth McClurkin welcomed members and guest, LaDene Rockford to Trinity Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) on July 11, in the fellowship hall, at Trinity Lutheran Church, followed by prayer.

Hostesses were Doris Quandt, LaVilla Quandt, Laurine Raschko and Vivian Salak.

The devotion was given by Betty Green based on 2nd Corinthians, ``In His Likeness.`` The Mite dedication was read by Ruth McClurkin.

Speaker, Joe Marshall, explained how budgets are developed through various boards and the importance of supporting mission ministries.

The ``Ladies Night`` date has been changed to Sunday, Sept. 21.

Members of the Human Care Committee tied 18 quilts and four baby quilts.

Forty-two visits to nursing homes, Veterans Hospital and Assisted Living were reported.

July birthdays were acknowledged.

The Sewing Circle will meet on July 24 and Altar Guild on July 29.

The next meeting is set for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8 in the fellowship hall. Pastor Rinehart will lead the LWML topic.

The mission project will be monetary gifts for the Russian orphanage.

Grand Island Sketch Club

The Grand Island Sketch Club met June 23 at Sutter's Deli for the end of the calendar year and planning for the 2009 year.

Kristin Husen of Wood River Public School was introduced and presented with the Club Scholarship check. She will attend Peru State College.

Dues are due at this time and delinquent Sept. 1. Each member is an active participant in the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs, Inc.

The audit committee is Jean Cook, Susanne Osberg and Alice Johns. Rae Jensen, with the help of Liz Patten, will continue with the exhibit at the County Administration building. Steph Hansen will be responsible for the exhibit at St. Stephens Offices Building. Rae Jensen will continue with the club Hospitality.

New officers were elected, they are: President, Steph Hansen; Vice-president, Sarah Young; Secretary, Mary Ann Heuertz; Treasurer, Alice Johns; Historian, Carol Stearns; Membership, Judy Miner and Publicity, Shirley Lingo.

The Association of Nebraska Art Clubs annual conference will be from June 17 through 21, 2009, at MONA in Kearney.

The planning committee will present the calendar of workshops when all are finalized, for the remainder of 2008 and 2009.

Qwest TelecomPioneers

The Qwest TelecomPioneers, Central Nebraska Council met July 8 at the United Veterans Club. Eighteen members were present. Deb Ahrens presided.

Deb thanked Nora Quinn, Nancy Johnson and herself for serving cake and ice cream at the VA Hospital on June 29.

Joann Houser gave the Fellowship Report.

It was voted that a portion of the proceeds from the fund raisers be given to the Merrick County Food Pantry in Central City, St. Paul Vets Museum, Fullerton Track Fund and the Lifeline program.

Upcoming Events and updates: 1.) Waffleman-Aug. 10. Deb emphasized selling as many tickets as possible ahead of time. Koann will notify media sources. Norma is searching for  volunteers. 2.) Picnic on Sept. 9. 3.) Junk Jaunt-Sept. 26 to 28. Many more items  are needed along with volunteers to work those days at Norma's house in Loup City. Deb will pick up items, contact her to make those arrangements. 4.) Soup Supper-Oct. 14. Suzie Paulsen is seeking volunteers to make soups and desserts. 5.) Christmas Party is Dec.  9.

Nebraska Admirals Association

The Nebraska Admirals Association of the Grand Island Port met July 16 at the United Veterans Club, 1914 W. Capital Ave., for their monthly meeting.

Commander Don Miller conducted the meeting. Jack Bixby, Chief of Staff introduced speaker Tom Barnes, Engineering Manager for the Utilities Department of the City of Grand Island. His presentation included information about utilities, the history of the city, explaining how the utility department works with the construction of new developments as the city continues to grow and storms and the problems that can occur. He was thanked for his presentation and he then floored a questions and answer period. 

Commander Miller continued with the business meeting.  Attendance for the meeting was 23. The upcoming annual meeting scheduled for November was discussed; it was decided that a dinner theatre will be included. Paul Warshauer, Murder R Us,  will help with the event.

Disbursement Officer Marjorie Donaldson provided the July 14 issue of the Kearney Hub which included an article about the Nebraska Admirals.

For future planning, the Port will host Bingo night on Sept. 25 at the Veterans VA Medical Center. 

The next meeting will be lunch at 11:30 a.m. and the business meeting at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Trinity Lutheran Evening Guild

The Trinity Lutheran Evening Guild met July 21 at the church fellowship hall. President Velma Hillman called the meeting to order, Devotion was given by Marge Johnson, titled, "Bounties of Nature." Ladies Night Out will be Sept. 21. President Hillman led the group in the topic, "Speak the Truth" with questions and answers. The July Mission was kitchen supplies. Leota Klein was hostess.

The LWML Convention, titled "My Rock, My Refuge," is scheduled for Sept. 26 and 27 in Hastings.

The next meeting will be a potluck picnic and social meeting beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at Wetzel's cabin.
