Hall County VFWA
The Hall County Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 1347 met Sept. 2 at the United Veterans Club. Senior Vice Lois Scott conducted the meeting.
The auxiliary accepted four new members; membership report: 142 life members and 91 continuous.
LaVonne Catron needs to receive dues renewals in a timely manner. Donation thank-yous were received from the Grand Island Veterans Home Staff for Santa and the Tom Wilcox nursing scholarship winners.
Catron hosted coffee hour at the VAMC on Sept. 13; coffee and fingernail painting at the GIVH were Sept. 16; and the District 11 meeting in O'Neill was Sept. 14. The Nebraska National President Dixie Hild's homecoming in Omaha was Sept. 26 and 27.
Flowers were sent to Abby Spiehs, the oldest woman in Nebraska, in honor of her 110th birthday. She's been an auxiliary sister for many years.
Scheduled events include the VFW and VFWA Fall Conference in Grand Island, Oct. 3 and 4, and the homecoming for Department Commander Roger Lang and President Carol Thompson on Oct. 3. Those planning to attend the supper on Friday need to send RSVPs to Karen Linden.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 6. A vote will be taken on changing the meeting night from Monday to Tuesday. Members need to attend to make their vote count.
Trinity Lutheran Laymen's League
Trinity Lutheran Laymen's League met Sept. 9 at the church for a potluck supper, business meeting and speaker. 45 members and one guest, Maria Rokke, were in attendance. Vicar Enterline opened with a prayer.
Speaker for the evening was Vicar Gregory Enterline, who shared information about himself, his family and background and what led him to the ministry.
Members decided to make a donation to the Orphan Grain Train for its recent help with the hurricanes, and Camp Luther Men's Retreat, and also made plans to decorate a tree for Christmas at Stuhr Museum.
Fred Fisher reported on the LLL International Convention in Lexington, Ky.
The annual LLL picnic on Aug. 12 at Wetzel's cabin was attended by 38 members and four guests, Don and Marie Madison, Alice Weber and Vicar Enterline.
Host committee Wilbur and Deanna Reeh, Gilbert and Kathy Khyn, Vivian Salak and Harold and Delores Langenheder.
The closing devotion was a DVD from the International Convention with the Rev. Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick.
The next meeting will be Oct. 14 with hosts Erwin and Lorna Schuster, Wilbur and Elaine Fuss, Irene Heider and Harold Freese.
Platt Duetsche Ladies Society
The Platt Duetsche Ladies Society offered a free luncheon to celebrate the organization's birthday for its September meeting. Honorary birthdays for the month were recognized.
Jeanette Hawthorne, Mary Gloe, Marilyn Hawthorne and Marty Van Hoosen were initiated as new members. Marilyn Webster introduced her guest.
Eleanor Ruge, Jackie Pollock, Bonnie Finnigsmeier, Fern Kunze, Irene Meyer, Doris Djernes, Shirley Thavenet, Dorothy Lilienthal, Theresa Scarborough and Pauline McCleery won door prizes. Two fish bowl drawings were won by Djernes and Tootie Husen.

Nebraska Epsilon Master Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi
Nebraska Epsilon Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi conducted the following meetings:
Aug. 31 -- Beginning Day at the Kisner Cabin at Cushing. Linda Sukraw opened the meeting and 10 members repeated the opening ritual.
A card was read from Connie Robison.
Members thanked Linda for having the ice cream social at her home on Aug. 11. Rose Ann Bredthauer passed out program books for the year. Sukraw also gave each member a City Council Book.
Ways and Means started a traveling basket. Bredthauer won the first basket.
A potluck dinner was enjoyed with husbands as guests.
Sept. 8 -- Meeting at the home of Mary Jane Stoltenberg. Linda Sukraw presided, with 12 members present.
Jo Ann Kisner won the traveling basket.
Connie Robison read from the Beta Book.
Correspondence from International provided information regarding a new member in town. Dee Rodgers will contact her and invite her to the group's meetings.
Stoltenberg read a friendship poem.
Elsie Hansen presented the program on cell phone manners. A discussion followed.
Sept. 22 -- Meeting at home of Kaye Bayne. Joan Heinzman presented the program. Games were played at the social hour.
Prairie Pioneer Quilt Guild
The Prairie Pioneer Quilt Guild met for their regular meeting Sept. 11 at Blessed Sacrament Church.
After a short meeting, the members enjoyed a program given by Roxanee O'Hare, from the Cosmic Cow quilt shop in Lincoln. Roxanne also had a hands-on session to help members explore using different fibers and mediums. Our mission was to get out of our box and experience new approaches to our art.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 518 W. State St. Amanda Benz, from Kearney, will make a presentation on the Dear Jane Quilt series.

Qwest TelecomPioneers
The Qwest TelecomPioneers, Central Nebraska Council, met Sept. 9 at Stolley Park for their annual picnic.
Twenty-eight members attended. No formal business meeting was conducted.
Qwest TelecomPioneers, Central Nebraska Council, participated in the Junk Jaunt in Loup City on Sept. 26-28. The group's location was at 627 N. Ninth.
In lieu of the next regular meeting, Qwest TelecomPioneers will be having a soup and dessert supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the United Veterans Club, 1914 W. Capital Ave. This fundraiser is open to the public and will feature many different kinds of homemade soups and desserts.
A large portion of the proceeds will be donated to the VFW Legion Club Auxillary to help purchase Christmas care packages for U.S. military personnel.
Central Nebraska Writers Network
The Central Nebraska Writers Network met Sept. 4 with member and guest introductions and current writing themes.
The October assignment is to write of a memorable trip you have taken recently or long ago.
The Central Nebraska Writers Network will next meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Grand Island Public Library. The room assignment will be announced on an easel in the foyer.
