GRAND ISLAND —

Midwest Country Music Show set for Monday

Terry Smith, a singer/songwriter from Nashville, and country duo Tex and Mary Schutz of Streetman, Texas, will headline a Midwest Country Music Show set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Grand Theatre, 316 W. Third.

Smith wrote "The Far Side Banks of Jordan," which is featured in Robert Duvall's movie "The Apostle," and has written songs recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys, Kathy Wells, Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, the Statler Brothers and more.

Tex and Mary Schutz are regularly featured on the RFD-TV national series "Midwest Country Music" and are longtime members of the Mid-America Country Music Hall of Fame.

Also appearing will be Bill Craven, Jay Kelly, Tom Schroeder and Elton Flodman.

German ’Brass Musicians' to perform at the Liederkranz

Lausitzer Blasmusikanten, "the original Brass Musicians from the Lausitz area" in Germany, will be performing from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Liederkranz, 401 W. First.

The group is made up of seven musicians from the town of Cottbus (southeast of Berlin) in eastern Germany.

There is no admission charge, but freewill offerings will be accepted. For more information, call 382-9337.



’Cowboy's Life' at Stuhr

One of Stuhr Museums most popular events gallops into town on Friday, July 25, when "It's a Cowboy's Life: An Evening Around the Campfire," gives cow hands and city slickers alike a feel of life on the open prairie.

It's an evening of activity for young ’uns, including the chance to try their hand at roping, burning initials into a piece of wood, making s'mores and other treats on an open campfire flame, listenin' to music appropriate for the trail and plenty of country games sure to please. For the big kids, Stuhr Museum's Railroad Town will be open and hoppin' with activity, and the summer exhibit "Vittles: Flavors Across the Plains" will be open.

Spend an evening around the campfire with events such as wood branding, roping, live music, smores, watermelon seed spitting contest and much more. Hours are 6 to 9 p.m.

Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children, with Stuhr Museum members and children 5 and under admitted free. For more information, call 385-5316.



Find the ’Magic in Me'

The musical, "Magic in Me," will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, and Saturday, July 26, at Grace Abbott Park. The show is part of the children's theater summer program offered by the Grand Island City Parks and Recreation Department.

Cast members are all children age 7 to 15 who auditioned earlier this summer and have been attending rehersals since auditioning.

There is no admission charge for the performance, but those attending are asked to bring blankets or lawn chairs. For more information, call Todd McCoy at 385-5444, ext. 290.



Hastings Museum to host annual Chuckwagon Roundup

HASTINGS -- Following the Adams County FairFest Parade on Saturday, the Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History will host a Chuckwagon Roundup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cowpokes of all ages are invited to come to the museum and take part in a barbecue lunch and a corral full of activities.

The afternoon begins with lunch served at 11 a.m. at Highland Park, directly behind the museum. Cost is $5 per person. Free roping lessons with Cowboy Boyd Mignery, wagon rides and horseback rides will take place in the park. Also featured will be Cloggers from T'Dance Studio.

Outdoor and indoor activities will include dinosaur crafts and activities for children. Regular admission or museum membership is required for the indoor activities.

Alda singer plans CD release party

Leesha Harvey, a singer-songwriter from Alda will be hosting a CD Release Concert at 7 p.m. Friday in the Hornady-Marshall Theatre at College Park.

Harvey will be performing original songs from her first independently released album, "Penny in the Pocket." Her folk-rock style is quickly gaining fans not only here in Nebraska but also around the world through her YouTube videos. In the past year, her videos have received more than 377,000 views.

This weekend at the Grand

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull " will be showing this weekend at the Grand Theatre, 316 W. Third. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

 During the  Cold War, Soviet agents watch Professor Henry "Indiana" Jones when a young man brings him a coded message from an aged, demented colleague, Henry Oxley. With Oxley's code, they find a legendary skull made of a single piece of quartz. Aging professor and young buck join forces with a woman from Jones's past to face the dangers of the jungle, Russia, and the supernatural. Starring Harrison Ford and Cate Blanchett, this movie is rated PG-13 for adventure violence and scary images.

Super Screen Theatre to show ’Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian'

HASTINGS -- The Lied Super Screen Theatre in the Hastings Museum will feature the 35mm film "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" on the giant screen at 7:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Sunday July 18-20 and July 25-27.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" finds the Pevensie siblings pulled back into the land of Narnia, where a thousand years have passed since they left. The children are once again enlisted to join the colorful creatures of Narnia in combating an evil villain who prevents the rightful Prince from ruling the land. "he Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian "stars Peter Dinklage, Anna Popplewell and Ben Barnes and is rated PG for epic battle action and violence.

All 35mm film admissions are $4.50 per person. There is also a discount available for seeing both a large-format film and 35mm feature the same day.
