Today is the long awaited Military Appreciation Day at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport. The day is packed with family activities and displays at the Grand Island facility.
One of the biggest highlights is the large display of current and vintage military aircraft at the airport. From the huge KC 135 and C-130, to the T-6 and T-38, there will be something for everyone. Also at the event will be a YAK-52, a 1947 Bonanza, a Blackhawk helicopter, a Nebraska National Guard Chinook and an OH-58 helicopter. And don't forget the vintage MASH helicopter. It is a time to wander around the aircraft, take pictures and enjoy the history of these aircraft that have played such an enormous part in our nation's military history.
Many natives will remember that the Grand Island Airport was once the home of a vibrant and extremely busy Army airbase during WWII.
The event is also fortunate to have Rear Admiral Thomas H. Copeman III speaking at the event. He is Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Training and Readiness for the U. S. Pacific Fleet. Yes, that means we should all snap a salute to him.
Another highlight will be the State of Nebraska Landmark dedication at the airport.
In a busy Husker-free weekend, it is important that we take time to honor those from the area who have served in the military. It is time to thank them and show our sincere appreciation for defending the freedoms we all enjoy today.
There will be concessions, ground support vehicles and lots of smiles around the airport. The fun starts at 9 this morning and will wrap up at 5 this afternoon.
