Commercial construction down, but housing starts up

June building permits showed new commercial construction in Grand Island lagging behind last year, while residential starts were ahead of a year ago.

The Grand Island Building Inspection Department issued no permits for new commercial construction during June, and the total value for the year to date was far behind that through June 2007.

It was a different picture on the housing side, however. Permits for new residential construction issued in June carried a total value of about $1.8 million, while no such permits were issued in June 2007. For the year through June, Grand Island had 59 new housing starts, valued at about $7.6 million. That compared to 48 new housing starts valued at about $7 million through June 2007.
