1. Tornadoes -- For the second straight year, tornadoes were Central Nebraska's biggest news story. And for the second straight year, those tornadoes just missed Aurora while damaging several buildings outside town. On June 17, a tornado roared down Highway 34 in western Hamilton County, ripping off part of the roof of the P&G Pet Care plant, destroying one house and damaging several others, along with quite a few crops and pivots. Fortunately, though, no one was injured.
2. The Sherman County Bank was shut down by federal regulators in February, with most of its assets absorbed by Heritage Bank.
3. Adams County Treasurer Julia Moeller resigned in January and was convicted of felony tax evasion in August.
4. Three former VeraSun ethanol plants in Central City, Ord and Albion were closed for the first half of the year before being bought and reopened this summer.
5. The first two Nebraskans to die of complications of H1N1 flu this summer were women from Custer County and Adams County.
6. Two area county officials were charged with sexual assault: former area sheriff's deputy LeRoy Svoboda and Valley County Supervisor Craig Vogeler.
7. Many area cities and school districts received federal stimulus money for projects, such as the $2.5 million allocated for a new wastewater treatment plant in Broken Bow.
8. Ord voters passed a $9.8 million school bond after a heated campaign, while Gibbon finished a new school building approved by voters in 2006.
9. After being closed for nearly two years, the former Crane Meadows Nature Center near Alda reopened this summer as the Nebraska Nature & Visitor Center.
10. The 11th annual Nebraska Cattlemen's Ball was held in June near Doniphan, raising $488,000 for cancer research in Nebraska.
