Chalk up another KU win over Huskers

MEN'S BASKETBALL

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas’ big men did all the dirty work down low, giving their stocky and powerful point guard extra chances to control the basketball game on the perimeter.

And Sherron Collins took advantage every time, leading the 15th-ranked Jayhawks past Nebraska 70-53 Saturday afternoon.

The junior guard’s creative dribbling and precise shooting was almost indefensible, even for the normally stingy Huskers. Collins made 8 of his 12 shots and finished with a game-high 22 points.

“It seemed like he couldn’t miss,’’ NU senior guard Steve Harley said of Collins. “When they really needed a basket, he hit the big basket.’’

But Collins’ success was a result of Kansas’ dominance inside.

The Jayhawks (22-5, 11-1 Big 12) pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, 11 more than the Huskers, and claimed a 23-2 advantage in second-chance points. Kansas finished with a rebounding margin of plus-22, the highest for any NU opponent this season.

“(Kansas) made a decision, I guess, to send all five guys to the offensive glass,’’ Nebraska coach Doc Sadler said. “They hurt us on the offensive boards about as bad as anybody has.’’

Despite the size disadvantage, Nebraska (16-9, 6-6) still managed to stay within striking distance until about 11 minutes remained.

Holding a 10-point lead, Kansas got two offensive rebounds on one possession, ultimately allowing Collins to nail a 3-pointer as the shot-clock buzzer sounded. The next time down, Markieff Morris’ two-handed rebound and dunk brought the 16,300 assembled in Allen Fieldhouse to their feet and gave KU a 50-35 lead with 9:50 left.

The Huskers never recovered and eventually trailed by as many as 20 after that.

The victory was Kansas’ 39th straight at home, a winning streak that leads the NCAA. The Huskers still haven’t won in Lawrence since 1999.

But senior Ade Dagunduro didn’t look intimated at all early on. With a foot on the 3-point line, he hit his first jumper in the opening minute and made one of two free throws on the next possession.

An all-too-typical offensive drought soon overtook the Huskers, though, as they missed nine consecutive shots during a six-minute stretch, falling behind by 10 points with about nine minutes left before halftime.

Nebraska avoided scoring fewer than 50 points for the third consecutive game, something that hasn’t happened to NU since 1959. But the Huskers still shot 38 percent from the field Saturday.

“Again, the same story, we’re just having a hard time scoring points,’’ Sadler said. “You’re not going to win at Kansas scoring 53 points.’’
