More than 2,000 firefighters expected at state fire school in G.I.

The 71st annual Nebraska State Fire School, which runs Friday through Sunday at Fonner Park in Grand Island, offers volunteer firefighters from across the state a chance to learn both basic and advanced firefighting skills.

An "I told you so" reaction came from U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson upon news that South Korea will be delaying implementation of its new protocol governing imports of U.S. beef beyond the agreed date of May 15 by seven to 10 days.

The Island Area Cruisers will put on the 13th annual Island Area Cruisers Charities Tour on Saturday at both Wal-Mart locations in Grand Island and also the Wal-Mart in Hastings.

GICC doubles teams move into semifinals in Class B

LINCOLN —

Grand Island Central Catholic's doubles teams took care of business on the first day of the Class B Girls State Tennis Tournament Thursday at the Nebraska Tennis Center. Both teams advanced into this morning's 9 a.m. semifinals. The No. 1 team of junior Hannah Bolton and freshman Jessica Wojcik will face Kearney Catholic's Nickola Messbarger and Molly Heeney. GICC's No. 2 team of Ashley Chalupa and Jessica Bender will play Kearney Catholic's Ellen Baldwin and Janna Montgomery in the semifinals.

Islanders one win away from state baseball title

Starting pitcher Kirby Wells and Grand Island try to finish off their postseason to remember against second-seeded Millard West (30-7) in the championship game at 10 a.m. Friday. If the Islanders lose, a second winner-takes-all game will follow.
